is there that big of a weight difference?...
I have an 87 TII that is pretty beast *see sig pic for mods*
i have always built 1st gen rx7's tho and have made them pretty fast but with alot less power. this car is definitely faster than any others i have built but would it be worth it to throw my current engine in to a 1st gen? would it make that much of a difference? i'm beating 11 second cars as it is and i'm only running 15psi. i plan to get to the track asap after fixing the diff mount, but i dunno. are these cars really pigs? it doesn't feel as fast as it is.. i guess i'm just used to the smaller cars lol! |
First gens are extremely light, FC's are still light but nothing close to an SA22. In fact, first gens are lighter than a Mclaren F1, 1080Kg.
|
the car isnt that much heavier than the 1st gen, it is somewhat but mostly because of the extra room. you shouldnt have a problem with weight since you ahve the s4 which is lighter than the s5 all around. unless you deem it uterly necessary to do the swap, just strip it down a bit, change the metal with carbon fiber or fiberglass that will lighten it a bit more.
looking at your pic the weight really shouldnt be that big of a deal |

For comparison (curb weights approximate): FB RX-7= about 2400lbs = light FC RX-7= about 2800 lbs = medium RX-7 Convertible, Supra MKII = 3000lb = a bit heavy Supra MKIII = 3500lbs = pig 3000GT VR4 = 3800lbs = boat anchor

well damnit hahaha
well the car is up for sale... i'm just gonna lay out for a bit hahaha. maybe get a lighter chassis again when i have time :) |
what a waste of time and energy. Go CF on parts. lexan windows..gut your car. my rx7 is 2280lbs. lighter than a 1st gen.
Dont sell your ride it would take too long to get back to where you are with a 1st gen. then you have to deal with drivetrain and a rearend to handle the power etc etc. Think aboutit. |
Find a friend who has a car that is actually heavy (e.g. Supra MkIII) and take it for a spin, you will then appreciate how light your FC is.
And as noted above if you want your car to be anorexic get CF parts, gut it, etc etc |
lol, i have a few buddies with heavy cars :) but the bastards have 700+ rwhp :( so they're not too slow hahaha.
what sux is i'm around too many turbo hondas that are running 10's with only 450whp. i'm not selling the car, i came to my senses... and the weight wasn't the reason for selling. i'm not that lame.. regardless i'm going to see what this turbo has in it and just give her hell :D |

the extra weight matters, but its not the whole story |

Not a pig, but the FC does weigh about 400lb more than an FB.

HAHAHHAHAHA. Ya my brother used to own an olds mobile, that thing was a land yatch. He didnt really care about it, so during its final days he bolted those white boat pontoons to the for corners of the car. It was halarious. Ya im really not a fan of heavy cars. FC's and FD's are a nice weights. |
For Drag racing, I would really prefer the 1st Gen. Solid rear is pretty good, but a beefier Ford unit isn't that hard to swap in. Light...parts are cheaper, is just plain OLD SKOOL!!
|
Depends. My 85 GSL-SE (the heaviest 1st gen) with an S4 TII motor, tranny, TO4, cast manifold, huge FMIC, and giant radiator tipped the scales at 2420 with less than 1/4 tank of gas. (Driver not included)
This year, with a 6-point, steel SA bumpers, and a Ford 8.8 I'm pushing well into TII weight. Estimate 2600lbs or more. BTW, the lightest FC I've seen was Chris Ludwigs stripped out N/A ITS car. It was a seat, a steering wheel, a cage, and a motor... 2200lbs. |
