T3 turbo blanket fit on HT18 compressor?
i destroyed my heatshield when removing my turbo, wondering if a T3 sized turbo blanket will fit my S4's HT18 compressor?
nobody knows if the HT18's compressor is similar in size to a T3?
Id love to know as well. Ive been looking at the summit blankets wondering what would work.
Chea, I but I need a blanket that covers the hot side. Anyone know?
I think it's worth a shot. The T4 blankets fit a large variety of turbos, it would make sense that the T3 ones would fit something the size of an HT18S-2S. It's a pretty big hotside for a stock turbo.
that's what i was thinking before spending the $155
just buy it dude.

Great advice....is that how you purchase shit for your car? Just buy it and hope it's right when it arrives? Idiot. |
wouldn't the utility of a turbo blanket be greatest when placed around the turbine as opposed to the compressor?
^^ Yes, That's why I asked for the hotside. But you have gains from the compressor also IF you insulate the hotside, manifold, down pipe.
I would think the t3 blanket for the turbine housing would be kinda small don't you think? Since most of the t3/t4 turbos have a .63 - .83 a/r housing. Stock TII hot sides are 1.0 a/r. S4 and S5 have the same hotside a.r and compressor housing. |
I know this is kind of an older thread but has anyone actually tried this? Same issue happened to me so just trying to figure out if it can be used or not.
Yea, I tried it. It will fit, but the stock turbo is placed very close to the intake manifold; it makes it a very tight fit. I was kind of afraid that being completely wedged between the manifold and the hotside would cause the material to ignite.... any comments on that?
Which blanket are you using?
the thing was made to be in contact with the turbine why would it be a worry? Is it pinched? Or your worried that since it is soo close next to the intake manifold that it isnt surrounded by roomy air?
keep in mind those blankets aren't designed for internally gated turbines...you would need a way to attach the wastegate actuator. the stock heat shields work best on the stock turbo. how on earth you ruined them while taking them off is beyond me...
make some alteration slot for the arm.
Cut and run it through a sewing machine http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x...2/DSC00308.jpg would be nice if we could do the diy stainless steel pot heatsheild http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...anonturbo4.jpg edit: you could probably do that trick, just cut the pot up and bolt it to the turbine housing/chra bolts. |
^ diy all the way brotha lol

Before I put my engine back in the car I need to replace my OEM heatshield also. I'm new to turbo blankets. And I've seen them varying prices. Is a blanket a blanket a blanket?
I'm getting some things from Prosport anyway and figured this might be a good option. It's either that or find an OEM heatshield....but those are all going to be 20yrs old and probably not much life left in them. http://prosportgauges.com/turbo-heat...t-t3-Grey.aspx |
If you can find some OEM heatshields that aren't rusted out, you can just clean them up. Scotchbrite and some high temp paint will have them looking new again. They're just metal, so there's really no "life" to them unless they rust.
My problem with the old one was the welded tabs that fastened the shield down were coming free. This happened before I detonated the engine and the shield was partially lying on the turbo and rattling. I got annoyed one day and cut it off.
I'll make a WTB thread and see if I can find one. But I do like the idea of putting something new on rather than worry about having to mess with an OEM shield down the road. |
Any recent changes over the years with this?
I need to do the same to my S5. I got this and it is a close fit. (short about and 1" on length) and " on downpipe side. https://thermalzero.com/product/univ...turbo-blanket/ but thinking that I can get a custom blanket made that is like this that will fit the S4/S5 turbos better https://thermalzero.com/product/lava...blanket-short/ |
