T2 diff compatibility
In order to bolt a T2 diff onto my GXL, do I just need the 'pumpkin' and it will directly bolt in or do I need the entire T2 subframe in order to get the diff in?

yes i know, but it can handle even a fairly modded n/a just fine unless thouroughly abused.

Well, if he plans on racing it, turbo II diffs are Torsen LSD's and GXL diffs use clutchpacks. Torsen's typically distribute power better and last longer. Although it could be just as simple as his old diff is popping and he found a TII diff cheap.

nope, S4 TII's had a clutch pack limited slip differential where the S5 TII's had the torsen and this has been debated before and is personal preference, yes the torsens last longer and distribute load better but must slip initially to do so where the clutch type LSD is always locked regardless.

I defer to your experience, on the torsen thing I was quoting Carroll Smith, but he made the blanket statement that the 2nd generation Rx7's had torsen units, and the GXL diff I have is definitely NOT torsen, I wasn't aware there was a change.
So I'll amend my previous statement. SOME Turbo II diffs are torsen units, which typically distribute power better and last longer than clutch pack diffs. I guess it could also be that some base model driver already snagged the LSD out of his GXL and left him with an open diff :D |
This is for a T2 swap. I was under the impression the the GXL diff and the S4 T2 rearend are different? Mine is pretty worn so im going to replace it anyway but are you saying I can bolt a T2 driveline to the GXL diff?
What im trying to get at is what is physically different. From the T2 1/2 shafts ive got im just assuming thats its got a different final drive and is a heck of alot beefier. |
IIRC they all had the same final drive except for a certain diff, I don't remember precisely but I think it was a certain year GXL maybe had a 4.3 instead of a 4.1 or something like that, a search would yield a better answer. If you're swapping an entire driveline, it will all bolt up fine. You can use a TII engine with an NA driveline also, but you'd need the NA flywheel and clutch to make it work with the NA transmission, and then it probably won't last long if you drive like I do :D
And even though it should all bolt up fine, don't throw anything away like bolts or mounts or anything. You never know. |
