swaping trannys
hey i got a 90 vert N/A auto
and i just wanted to know all the shgit i will need to convert it to a 5 speed (everything i have no clue on what i need becides the 5-speed it self) thanks |
Well I am doing the tranny swap on my 91 coupe. First off if you want to do the swap your best bet would be to get a parts car......very cheap wrecked anything just to take out the trans....pedals....and other clutch and trans part. And then get some tools and a welder and you can do it. Good luck

would one work off of a turbo ??? cause i heard it's a better tranny than the one the n/a comes with
|
yeah, the turbo tranny will work. You will have to get a different driveshaft, however, as the NA driveshaft will not mate up to the turbo tranny / NA differential. There was a discussion awhile ago on this -- I believe the driveshaft from the automatic car might work with the Turbo transmission and the NA differential.

what about wiring??

Message SonicRat he just did the swap in his car. I helped him with it but im not sure of all the stuff that he had to buy and have setup. I know he got a custom differential mount from hyp. It was a pain in the ### but it only took about three nights of working on it after work.

Here's my parts list:
'91 Turbo 2 Tranny Turbo 2 Driveshaft Turbo 2 LSD Turbo 2 Slave cylinder Master cylinder (for the clutch, all the same) You *CAN* use the automatic driveshaft, although its flimsy, weak, and doesn't slide in all the way, but it slides in enough to be safe, although I decided against using it. Best to just run the entire drivetrain. Brake/clutch pedal assembly (requires you to remove the steering column, not all too hard, did it in about 2 hours complete to install the pedals) Automatic -> Manual transmission conversion mount (thanks to hypntyz7) Pretty much, you take off the mount from the 5 speed tranny, keep your automatic mount! Take off the 5 speed mount and remove the lower part of the mount (so that the rubber bushings and the huge stud is still left behind) Get a bunch of washers and some angle iron and measure out the distance between your automatic mount and then drill holes in the angle iron, and mount it like this. http://www.sonicrat.org/~rat/cars/rx...2/DCP_0574.JPG http://www.sonicrat.org/~rat/cars/rx...2/DCP_0575.JPG |
Hey SonicRat,
Have you experienced any driveability problems since your conversion? I'm just wondering how the car drives afterwards... RM |
if I knew that, I would tell you, but since i did a complete NA-> Turbo, I'm still in the process of making it run reliably :)
|
I di d it too best thing to ever do to your car.
