supercharging my N/A

Alright......I want to put a supercharger on my 87 N/A. Im sure we all remember "zBrown" and his supercharger but to my understanding he never did a write up. well to me what he did didnt look all that hard.

My question is for everyones input on the things i would need and things i might have to change to do such a project?????

Thanks alot! J GREENE

Heh... that type of thing is decieving. Yes, it cna be done. But always be prepared for twice as much, or more, work than you expected.

Intake, Fuel control, more fuel flow, timing retard. thats about it.

check out the camden sc kit its a 7" sc and it is a little pricey but they did there r and d on this one and it looks like its turnin out real nice

to supercharge:

things you MUST HAVE:

supercharger

bracket(must be fabbed)

crankshaft pulley

belt

intake adapter(must be fabbed)

now, THEORETICALLY you could run really low boost and get away with the stock ECU and injectors etc etc.

things you REALLY should get:

some kind of EFI control

larger secondaries

free flowing exhaust

larger fuel pump (perhaps a TII pump? more power needs more fuel)

TII tranny/rearend/driveshaft

you could run a bit more boost with these things.^^^^^ above.

things you will probably want:

custom intake manifold or TII mani(will require a bit of hacking)

MUCH larger secondaries and possibly a tad larger primaries(550's maybe)

high flow fuel pump(walbro)

intercooler or water injection or both

supercharger porting(we're talking magnaport II here) OR whipple/lysholm

larger throttle body(though ours are pretty big, you COULD go with a FD tb)

engine porting

sky's the limit

pick something that costs money.

I am beginning this same project right now. I plan on doing the actual work this fall/winter to have ready for spring.

STEPS:

- Full engine rebuild using RotaryAviation's Master Kit
- Porting to housings during rebuild
- Use TII rotors, e-shaft, & counterweights
- Eaton M62/M90 supercharger
- Fab a mount bracket and mandrel bent intake piping
- OPTION 1: FMIC
- 550cc Injectors (secondaries definite, primaries maybe)
- TII or Walbro fuel pump
- Port and polish intake
- TII tranny and LSD rear-end (NA or TII w/ driveshaft)
- Aftermarket fuel controller
- Single gauge A-pillar pod w/ boost gauge
- New PD
- BOV

I am going to use the TII rotors and what-not to ensure slightly lower compression to avoid too much stress on the Apex seals. I don't want to mill them out to 3mm.

I am planning on doing the majority of the work during February after my bonus check and tax refunds arrive. The supercharger will be picked up whenever I find a good price on one from either a local junkyard or on ebay. I plan on doing a rebuild on it too before installing to ensure reliability on it.

I am also doing the 5-lug conversion during the fall to early winter for the better brakes on my SE.

After the full rebuild and the supercharger installation (should be easier when the engine is being installed to fab things and mount them), I will finish removing the air pump and get a new race pipe made up (right now there is a pipe attached to a gutted main cat).

zBrown's idea worked really well, but he also had some things going for him that the average builder may not. 1, he scrap metal and the welding know how to make what he wanted. 2. Time. 3 The pulley.

While everyone suggested that he used larger injectors, etc etc; you can get away with out using it like he did. Start small and build up. After you get the SC installed and working the 2nd thing i would get is some kind of fuel controller (i would thing that an SAFCII would work up to about 200 hp) then go for larger injectors.

It really depends on what you're wanting from your car.

ok What would i need to remove for this project??? i dont have P/S, but I still have A/C and my smog pump, whitch i noticed Zbrown did not have. If i remove the smog pump do i have to wire open the 5th and 6th ports??? if so how do i do so???

If I was to do this project I would really look into getting a whipple supercharger if at all possible rather than the M90.

At this point, you might as well just buy a TII engine (J-spec) and sell the turbo on eBay. BTW, all eccentric shafts from '85 up are the same. Counterweights don't matter if you are not going S4 -> S5 or vice versa.

3MM apex seals are no stronger then 2MM, and don't seal as well.

smog pump has to go for the extra space you will need

Mr. Gadget 07-21-04 08:46 PM

if your doing it for the experience and excitment, cool. if your doing it to get tii performance cheaper you might be disapointed. Why exactly are you doing this?

josh greene 07-21-04 11:45 PM

im doing it just for some cheep HP!

Kenteth 07-22-04 12:07 AM

cheap...?

Just remember that the way superchargers are supposed to work is with the TB before the supercharger. In Zbrown's set-up, he had the SC placed in front of it. At WOT there won't be any difference, but any other time remember that the supercharger will be compressing air into the partially closed TB. Towards the end of the infamous "my supercharging project complete" thread, some people started to explain why this was a bad idea. Zbrown still got the results he wanted though. A cheap way to make a substantial power gain. All I know is that ideally the TB should be before the SC, so if you're good at fabbing stuff up look into that.
