Suggestions on magnaflow muffler, single exit for NA w/ RB header/Presilencer
 

like the title states, looking to get a magnaflow muffler, preferably around the $75 range that will sound good. I got a thrush muffler on now but it is not a straight through design and sounds good daily driving but WOT sounds horrible. I have Racing beat street headers (they collect to the single outlet, not dual), RB presilencer, custom 2.5" back to the muffler. My stock exhaust literally fell off the car and was unusable at a time I had no money. my brother gave me the header and presilencer, and I went to an exhaust shop to have the pipe made and welded to the presilencer as studs were broken on one side. Wondering what sounds good and what will fit in the stock muffler area (the offset of the in/out and shape, my cheap thrush was kinda thrown in there crooked as it was an emergency fix and kinda big).

Since I broke our flat screen by accident, my tax refund is going towards a new one instead of wheels so at least I want to do something nice for the car lol.

aboce my price point. I really want to keep it cheap and I know that a magnaflow can do that and sound good (heard many sound clips of sevens with similar setup as mine). would I want a racing beat exhaust? yes. can I afford it or buy it instead of spending for my t2 rebuild. no, not at this point. I just want my bees in a tin can WOT pulls to go away lol. something sub $100 but really would like to not spend more then $75. $25 more in my pocket is a big deal to me, I gross 13K-15k on average and have a 4 year old. not exactly swimming in money lol. Love my 7 though.

I had a RotaryShack long tube header, a cat, a straight-through presilencer and a magnaflow straight-through muffer on my '90 GTUs and it sounded terrible. I ended up going the cheap route and using a Summit turbo-style muffler in the rear which quieted it down and killed the droning but still didn't kill the rasp entirely. It was a cheap solution though and worked pretty well.

well I have the rb headers catless and the rb presilencer which they say is one of the better pre silencers on the market. the thrush I have right now is one of those 180 degree (the s shape internals) resonated mufflers. it sounds great for daily driving but once over like 3500 rpms, it gets super raspy. I've heard that straight through magnaflows would fix this and have heard some clips in the past but don't recall which ones or dimensions. thank you for your experience though. I'll see if I can find some vids of the systems I heard before and what they were running. thought it would be faster to just start a thread and ask. I know its been covered somewhere before but it takes time to find things, thats why we can start new threads after all.

The straight through mufflers will kill rasp but they drone.

You need a reactive muffler to kill the drone.

might be stupid, but what constitutes a reactive muffler? example? I can deal with drone as I have a little already at highway cruising in 5th already and my interior is stripped. its surprising how much noise just the hatch floor carpet/mat keeps out of the car. its kinda hefty though. I can always toss it back in if I want. I'm NA with next to 0 mods so I want all the power to weight ratio I can get. gutting the doors this year I think which I'm sure is going to have a big reduction. they are soooooo heavy as are the stock seats (I have a drivers side corbeau forza. a lot less weight).

and before anyone asks, no. I have no reason for the weight loss really other then my prefernces. I drift the car sometimes and daily. maybe a few pulls. I'm not competing or anything, just like a peppier car. Pardon me if it seems "ricer" or stupid to some ;)

^ guess I had that coming. especially with my sig lol. by and by, sometimes it is funny seeing the looks I get when I WOT with this cheap thrush. pretty much sounds like a dirtbike bred with a go cart...

so a reactive muffler is the same as a chambered muffler? thats what I'm reading...I think. unless flowmaster uses 2 technologies in one. I was told elsewhere (by rotary guys) that a chambered muffler would be even worse then what I have and what I needed was something straight through. I'm just going to pick something from youtube that sounds ok I think.

i actually just installed a magnaflow single exhaust on my 13b and im not going to lie, i HATE it. i had originally done a straightpipe setup on mine and just be curteous to my neighbors, i went to go put a muffler on mine and i put a magnaflow on it that i had pulled off of an eclipse in the junkyard. its way way way too quiet. its to the point where i can hear my clutch fan over the exhaust and im not a big fan of the way it sounds. honestly IMO i would order a more straight through muffler off of amazon or something. especially for the money youre going to shell out.it looks good, but thats about it.

A reactive muffler is not the same as a chambered muffler. Reactive mufflers have chambers but also diffusers and perforated pipes and packing.

They attenuate low frequencies very well where straight through magnaflow/borla mufflers attenuate high frequencies very well. You really need both on a rotary.

know you might be asking why i posted a cherry bomb right? well if you put a cherry bomb on backwards (arrow pointing toward the engine). IT HAS THE REVERSE EFFECT. pretty neat huh and they are cheap as fawk. only down side is depending on how hard you drive the fiberglass packing may not last very long.

^ I have read on this site that fiberglass pack just won't hold up to our exhaust temps even under normal driving. I have a RB presilencer already as stated so maybe that would help the sound a bit. thanks for the feedback guys. I'll see if there are any reasonably priced reactive mufflers and if not then I'll just go with one that's straight through.

I have a CorkSport header with a main cat and a Borla cat back exhaust which has straight through type mufflers. The exhaust is LOAD and the droning is horrible. I have had to add sound deadening material on the floor of the hatch area and in the spare tire well just to make it somewhat tolerable inside the car with the windows and sunroof closed.

What is needed to make a quite high flow quite n/a system with a header and a main cat is most likely a pair of 3-1/2" or 4" round case resonators / mufflers that have a perforated straight through pipe and SS packing, located right after the Y-pipe. Then have a pair of chambered / perforated turbo style mufflers mounting out back. That should take car of both the high and low frequencies noises while reducing the drone and maintaining a high flow rate. If you are not running a cat, then the resonator or pre-silencer can be mounted in front of the Y-pipe where the cat(s) would be located.

I got a good price on the low mileage used Borla system. I am just not sure I want to head over to Stainless Works and have them design and build me a custom cat back exhaust system that would be quieter $$$.

You need muffler volume to decrease sound. Doesn't matter if you get it via length or case diameter.

In general, though, straight through mufflers do not kill low frequencies well. No matter how many you have.
