A Stupid Idea For Cold Air!?

i was thinking.. what if i made a cold air box, with 1/2 inch spaced apart walls.. a sealed 1/2 gab around the cold air box. like a second box around your cold air box.. and maybe fill it with water.. and or C02 to keep it cooler.. ?

krazykoncepts 03-25-04 08:21 PM

maybe i dont understand correctly but how will air be getting in? from the bottom?

also the water (in my opinion, dont know actual facts) will not really help. unless you can keep it cool. one you drive around the whole engine bay will warm up warming up the water?

this is for a daily driver?

Molotovman 03-25-04 08:23 PM

Dry Ice In a cold air box!!!!! HAHAHA!!!!!
just kidding. put a small pump through a little liquid nitrogen cooler and wrap coils around your air filter. WTF?

n4ji 03-25-04 08:27 PM

Your ideas seem kind of far fetched. People have fabricated their own cold air boxes that cool the air sufficiently enough. Search for cold air boxes and I think you'll find some models that will fit what you're trying to accomplish.

87base RX-7 03-25-04 08:39 PM

ehh if its just filled it wont do much hmm maybe a small intercooler with a little pump too cerculate the water i know dragers have special intakes they put ice around. ive often wonder why sombody doesnt hook up a little air conditioner or one from a small freezer or somtin and put the coil in front they havent done it before cause of the wait but now there gettin pretty small and lite so hmm might try it somday lol.if u sprayed the CO2 like the one zex i (believe) intake into the air (maybe it uses nitrous but i though it was CO2 though nitrous has major coolin properties too thats where a good chunk of the power is from)

Project84 03-25-04 08:43 PM

Its C02. Nitrous cost too much to waste it on an intercooler. using an A/C system means the compressor has to be engine driven, unless you know of an electrical A/C compressor. I doubt you will gain much power after you consider the extra load on the engine from turning the compressor, and the extra load electrical load of the alternator supplying power to the compressors big ass magnetic clutch.

87base RX-7 03-25-04 09:17 PM

u could use a electric one from a small fridge freezer or maybe a small house air conditioner (though the house ones would probaly be a little big) or atache a electric motor too drive the compressor instead of the pulley just a though but yea ur probaly rite jus cause of weight and most are belt driven so u lose some there and u run it off the battery that takes away from the spark or u get a bigger battery and get more weight it would all depend on how well it works and the power gains too weight though if u could cool it enough it might lead too some suprising gains

Scott 89t2 03-25-04 09:46 PM

the best insulater is still useless if no cold air can get into it....

Tofuball 03-25-04 09:51 PM

It will weigh too much. to even be worth it.

Some people biuld CAIs out of metal and put a box for ice on top for drag racing. 'Specially with turbos.

87base RX-7 03-25-04 11:58 PM

the weight is comin down though (my dads trade is H.V.A.C. and i give him a hand on the weekends and such ) im not sayin it wouldnt affset the gains with weight but yea ive always wanted too try... some day lol

88IntegraLS 03-26-04 12:14 AM

What would be really cool would be to make an insulated intake manifold . . double walled with foam in between, but it would be hard to fab, that's for sure.

87base RX-7 03-26-04 12:29 AM

yea ive thuoght bout makin like three-five slices about 6-7 in long in the hood over and a little in front of where the intake sits and bend them up too catch the air too bring it in or even a little scoop like on some of the old 300z but the scoop would look ugly the slits might look nice

ZenkiBrokie 03-26-04 12:37 AM

why not just wrap it in heat shielding?

87base RX-7 03-26-04 12:44 AM

insulating its good but i want more air flow too the thing

bjohnson 03-26-04 10:22 AM

has ne one thought of making a set up that will spray your intake or intercooler with "freeon" (used in airconditioners) to get way cooler air

OverDriven 03-26-04 10:55 AM

If you built another box around it and could fill it with dry ice, it would work well for drag runs, but won't last long. Dry ice sublimates way too fast. You would also have to make sure that the dry ice vents off away from the intake since CO2 into your intake will prevent combustion. The box would be best of made of metal so it could draw the heat off better. So yeah its a good idea for short runs. The dry ice might stay in there 20-30 minutes of you're lucky.

Do you have any idea how expensive freon is? Not to mention how illegal it is to vent the stuff to the atmosphere? HORRIBLE idea.

derek1987 03-26-04 11:10 AM

how about water injection. It should cool the air down for a more denser air charge. I plan on try it one day on my NA.

Who said anything about freon? I thought he was talking about dry ice.

Good lord man. I never thought it was possible but this thread is getting about as stupid as "what if I attach a leaf blower to the intake" and the gone but never forgotten "what if I zip tie the flapper door of my AFM open"

If your running a turbo car, then a proper intercooler setup negates the need for any type of artificial cooling of the air box. If your running an n/a car how much horsepower do you think your going to pick up from atrificially cooling the air box? Just turbo charge the car and be done with it. People keep trying to nab an extra 2 hp oout of their n/a FC's. It's an n/a FC people, unless your going balls to the wall with a full bridge whats the point?

yup if you want to try water just go with the aquamist erl system...

Think it could make any difference?

Time to go to Home Depot! ;)
