Struggling to remove old gasket: Suggestions?
Am trying to remove the old plenum gasket (dynamic chamber), stuck to the block and not getting it off easily.
Using a putty knife, not too much progress. Just bought some Gasket Remover (Methlyne Choloride......nasty) & first attempt was not too great. Any tricks to this? Thanks |
Get a piece of copper pipe and cut it at an angle. Make sure it is copper, b/c it will be softer then the manifold so as not to scratch it.

VERY CAREFUL use of a razor blade...
Else, if you got the money, go buy a set of those 3m Scotch-Lok 2" sanding disc kit from Sears.  You'll need to remove all the studs so you get a flat surface and sand away.  Use the middle "grit" first and see if they takes it off - if not, move to the coarser "grit"... -Ted |
Get a Drimel Tool (sp?) and easily use a grining bit and ease that shit off. just be damn careful when you start getting down to the manifold. Good luck

After 4 hrs of scraping and using solvent to soften the gasket with razor blades and putty knives, I got the gasket off....my buddy's '68 Mustang head gasket wasn't half this tough. Would have liked to have tried the other ideas. Great thoughts.
Put the manifold back on w/all connections. Cranked it up, just an hour ago.....Yahooooooooooooooo! :D You gotta love that sound. Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help!! |
I used a razor blade (a couple blades) on mine... took me awhile though. Luckily it didn't cost me a finger or two.
