strong smell of fuel in oil
 
I changed my oil and there was a strong smell of fuel. I started on syn blend for the last 2 changes, would that have anything to do with it, or is there a bad gasket somewhere? Does seem to be eating more gas. Any help. thanks

that is pretty normal in a turbo 7 mine is usually gas smelly , how often do you change oil ? i usually go for about 2500 miles befora a oil change, as far as syn oil full synthetic is a no no usually because , 7s are designed to burn oil and full syn doesnt burn clean or good but most syn blend is usually crude oil just with additives for better protection and such . Unless you run premix i suggest never using full syn blend in a 7

I've heard the same regarding synthetic oil. There are some who swear by it and others who will never ever think to put it in their cars. To each his own. I have a t2 also and notice the same thing when I change my oil (about every 2800 or so). Maybe someone else has a good explanation as to why it does that......

as to why oil smells like gas its probably because under boost , small amoumts of fuel is forced past orings between the rotor housings and rotors into oil flow around eccentric shaft . just my theory though .

Search synthetic oil on the site, its been covered a lot. Those of you here spreading misinformation should go read that stuff. Mobil 1 recommends use of they're synthetics in rotaries. Of course there are some lower grade synthetics like Valvoline, Castrol or Pennzoil which which have a high ash content when burned, thus arent recommended in rotaries. As of now I use conventional Castrol GTX 5w 30 (I live in Canada), If you do use synthetic I strongly reccomend Mobil 1. Royal Purple is amazing, and has been tested in rotaries. But...its damn expensive, there is also RedLine and AmsOil. I'm probably gonna buy RedLine next to try it out, they've definitely got they're shit together.

As far as your problem, are you experiencing any problems starting? Like hot or cold start problems?

i changed to full synthetic( redline) and I change the oil about every 3000 miles. I don't drive too hard every day but do ream it out every now and then. Seems from the posts that the smell is normal, maybe just never really noticed it before. No probs starting or any thing like that Idels hi, but I'm fixing that so thats about all. Thanks for the posts.

You have fuel dilution issues from leaky seals. The fuel is thinning out your oil. The only real fix is a rebuild, but you don't need to do that yet. You should change your oil more often and use 20w50 (thicker oil) to slow down the leak.

In rare situations (like yours?) synthetics clean up some sludge that was clogging a leak. It's already cleaned so I don't think switching back would help, but it wouldn't hurt either. Considering how often you'll be changing your oil I'd switch back b/c of cost.

well the main reason it smells like fuel its like any other motor gas passes the seals(that what it should do) and thats just it its not that your motors bad its totaly normal now if you like drain like a extra qt and it smells real strong then that might be the case but as for the smell its ok . if you want to know y gas passes the seal its because the compression and the fact that the seal dont cover 100% of the camber so alittle passes each time. Also most cars have a filter for it its called a crank case vapor filter FYI
