Strong gas odor and rough idle

I need some help here!!

I have a 1986 RX-7 GXL. The problems that I am having right now consist of a strong odor of gas and a rough idle. I just replaced my battery and starter as of a couple days ago. The smell of gas is so strong inside the car that it is almost too unbearable to drive. I thought there might be a leak somewhere but my gas consumption has not changed one bit and I dont see any drips. Along with this strong gas odor, the car idles real rough. The tac just goes form 1000 and drops almost to zero over and over again. This car has always had a smooth idle until I started smelling the gas odor, there is almost no doubt in my mind that these two things are related, unless someone can prove me wrong. PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks!

i read somewhere about a part of the early second gen fuel system being prone to leakage, and that it sat right on top of the engine, so it would bake, and crack, and spill fuel on the hot engine and roast your rexy...
you should get that checked out by a mazda dealer, i dunno if they made a recall for it though, so it might cost money

do not drive your car!!!!!!!!!!

more than 90% chance that your pulsation damper is leaking. do a search for "pd" or Pulsation damper. they will tell you all you need to know.

once again.... DO NOT DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL TOAST YOUR REX

I'D CHECK THE PD YES BUT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU JUST NEED TO ADJUST THE IDLE SPEED AND TPS
sorry for the caps
also check if you accidentaly disconnected any vacume lines

You might have clogged cats as well. Clogged cats will suck power like a cheap whore and your whole cabin will smell of gas. It's not too intense but it sticks to your clothes after you leave the car.

If it's raw gas you smell, don't drive it. Check the engine bay, then check under the tank and follow the lines for leaks.

clogged cats will do that ??? hmmm in my TII at WOT and boost i get a gas odor from the vents. i'm gonna take apart the car next week probably. a couple of people mentioned charcoal canister, leaky injectors, bad vacuum hose. my TII is an 89 so i doubt its the PD. any other ideas :)

if you cant find a pd or banjo bolt in time you can do a temporary fix. get some jb weld and go to your local hardware store with the broken pd (if the screw is gone that is) and find a short self threading screw that will fit the hole. screw it into the pd and back it out so that you have threaded the hole, dip the screw into the jbweld and screw it into the hole. then put some jb around the screw to make sure it is a tight seal. after it has set you can put it back in, you wont be able to push the throttle in more than 1/8 of hte way before it loses power, but it is drivable at highway speeds (jsut no acceleration)

this is a temp fix and you must get a new pd as soon as possible
