Street Port vs. Emissions Dilema. HELP!
 

I want to get a full street port on my 88 n/a but I have to be able to pass the emissions. I live in Ontario Canada, and I don't know how much the emission standards vary but is there any way I can pass the emissions with a street port?

I've read about changing ecu settings and making the air pump, pump extra air to the cat etc. etc.

Man I want this street port! There's gotta be a way!

If Canadian emisson requirements are as stringent as California, then no there is no way you will pass with a street port.

But you would probably want to post in the Canadian section of this board, and ask there instead of here.

I have been reading all the forums and there was one post that said he past the emisions in CA with a street port. Now I don't think Canadian standards are as crazy but that was hopeful!

Youd have to cheat emissions. Porting = will not pass. dont be fooled by the 'street' in street porting. Basically it means 'driveable'

my street ported n/a was over 10,000 over the limit for hydrocarbons.

There are many people on this board that have passed with street porting. I believe it usually involves a new cat and air pump constantly pumping to the cat. Sometimes alcohol in the tank. Tuning with an SAFC to lean it out wouldn't hurt either.

Another thing you can do is leave the primary ports (mostly) stock, but port the secondary & aux ports. The emissions test shouldn't take the car over 3800 RPM where the secondaries come on.

There are ways to do it. If you're insane, you can always keep two complete engine/exhaust combos around - one for emissions testing, and one for the rest of the time.

If I can get a secondary bridgeport to pass emissions, a streetport is a cakewalk.
Any of the streetports I build and tune, which are by no means considered conservative, will produce stock, if not improved, emissions levels over a stock functioning vehicle.

I dunno about california emissions, but I doubt it would be impossible to pass a streetport.

Yes, but I suspect you don't do that with the stock engine computer.

Also, just out of curiosity, do you run your high-efficiency cruise maps with a catalytic converter? I'm not sure what kind of sustained EGTs a cat can take, but I know yours are a bit on the high side at cruise. I'm kind of wondering if the cats will turn into a nice liquid paste.

The mildly streetported engine scathcart built for me passed no problem (stock computer / emissions controls)

I do not run the cruising lean-burn maps with cats installed. They do not survive. I install cats solely for emissions testing.

The uber-lean maps will pass emissions testing without a cat installed, but you need a cat and an air pump for the idle testing.

What do you consider lean-burn AFR? I've been trying out 15.2 afr and I don't want to burn out the cat--EGT is running about 1400 f at cruise--not too bad.

I wouldn't go any leaner with a cat.

1400 degrees... where is your probe located? I aim for that on a turbo engine at WOT, and even higher than that on a N/A at WOT. I put my probes 2-3" from the exhaust port if I can.

I normally see at least 1750-1800 degrees under cruise... 15.8-16.6:1 AFR's, depending on when the engine starts to lean burn misfire.

Thanks for the info... so maybe I should go for it! Since I'm in Canada I was going to get Rx-Specialties to do the port job, but I don't know how good their rep is. Anyone know?

Any suggestions for a good place to get the port job done.... and how much of a hp gain should I expect from a street port?

About 2 inches after the turbo in the downpipe. Best I could do. Basically I'm looking for relative measurements--so far it's working pretty good.

sorry to revive this thread ... but i have a question. I just got this streetport (i think its a mild one) with roughly 30k on it, i havent swapped it in yet but when i heard it run it sounded smooth. I was wondering if its going to be difficult to pass with minor mods (intake, rb collector/header, rb cat, stock catback, and i think all my emissions)
