Strange coolant problem: could be seals, no smoke
 

I have been consistently upgrading/repairing my coolant system since I got my 87' TII...

Koyo rad, new thermostat, new 90* TB hose, new water pump, new wp housing gasket, new heater hose, re-routed TB coolant line to bybass BAC...

Each time I fix something, a couple months later, something else fails.

Recently the low coolant light has been coming on, but the car does not overheat before I get a chance to add more water.

I looked for a leak w/ the car running and there was NO visable leak. After the car was turned off I noticed a constant drip coming from the rear passanger side corner of the block. Further inspection revealed coolant was coming from somewehere under the UIM.

My first thought was 90*TB hose since I recently re-routed the TB coolant lines, but there was no coolant on the top of the housings....

I then noticed a pool of coolant in between the LIM and the block. I used a paper towel to get it out, but when I came out to check it this morning it was full again :scratch:

Is it possible for a coolant seal to externally only? Any ideas on how to fix it if it is? JB the gap perhaps?


The car still starts up and runs fine, there is no smoke on start up or otherwise, plugs look normal, and it idles than same as the day I got it.

Could be one of the rubber o-rings between the rotor housings and the LIM.

Thanks, I'll start looking for those o-rings then, maybe I'll luck up and napa will have them....

EDIT* - I just looked at the LIM gasket on Mazdatrix, it appears that there is a coolant passage in the upper left hand corner of the gasket/manifold, and now that I think about it there was some gray material in that hole...I guess it was bloated gasket paper that had been forced from between the manifold and the block and soaked w/ coolant.


I also need to get back to school, hopefully I can make it 270 miles if I carry coolant w/ me *crosses fingers*

it could be your radiator caps. i just swapped in a koyo on my t2 and it made one of my caps start leaking

Thanks for the input, but I have yet to see a rad cap leak make it under the UIM....

IT could be that hose that goes from the rear iron to the thermostat housing.

yea, thats the 90 degree hose I first suspected, but it was fine, and there was no coolant on top of the housings?
