Straight pipe (86 GXL)
 

Hey guys, I am entertaining the thought of a straight pipe on my 86 GXL. The car has just broken 96k on the clock. I am looking for a good sound without it being deafening. Also, I dont want to sound like a Honda Kid pulling through the streets where I live. I know my sound will be much louder, however, I am more worried about the effects on the fuel economy/pressure. I planned on hopefully getting a straight-pipe with a Blitz Nur-Spec II Muffler on it. I am very open to other ideas, I am just curious on how difficult or expensive it is to replace the original dual exhaust to a singe exit straight pipe.

If anyone has done a straight pipe, how much did it cost?

Does anyone have good videos of a straight pipe into a muffler?

Hey, I have a 88 GXL, and sorry I have no pics or videos, but I do have a n/a with a rb header to a straightpipe, and it is ungodly loud. My wife "claims" to be able to hear my angry swarm of bumblebees a mile away. If you don't want loud, look to a full system. I'm still trying to get stuff together, but at the moment, it's all I have.

Straight Pipe N/A will be ungodly loud and sound worse than the Honda Boy.

my brother used to have an na with header to y pipe to dual apexi n1's. i could easily hear him approaching my place 2-3 blocks away while in doors. ears would ring if i rode in that car for more than 5 minutes.

get a high flow cat(no performance loss) to rb/eq exhaust. nice tone, great performance, less smelling like you took a bath in a lawn mower. happier environment etc.

still new to the forum and never really built a car before. i knew straight pipe would be obnoxious, but i know a guy who could do it cheap because he owns an exhaust shop. but what are some good full/cat-back systems i could look into for a clean crisp sound that doesnt wake my neighbor (hes a cop) at 3am.

a turbo would quite things down nicely ;) rb= racing beat. good stuff

open exhaust is incredibly loud. And on a stock n/a that will struggle to put anything north of 110 hp to the ground, you are going to look quite stupid having to rev it and make all that noise, just to keep up with traffic.


Take your exhaust off before the cat. Drive around for 5 minutes making baby's heads implode. By the time you get back, it will go from cool to stupid.

That's what I already find embarrassing about driving my N/A RX7. They make so much noise but aren't going anywhere.

By straight pipe do you mean:

- straight pipe across where your cat used to be
- straight pipe from the header to the rear of the car with no resonator or muffling at all

If it's the first, just go to your local exhaust shop and it should cost you less than $100.

I've only had one complaint about my exhaust and it was from an old man who needs a hearing aid. I love loud and I wouldn't trade my exhaust for anything.

But I bet your neighbors and the cops would beg to differ.

Also, Racing Beat mufflers are the ONLY way to go for an NA. IMO of course..
If you can find a RB catback, they're usually about $300 used, and they NEVER go bad. Sad in a field for years that floods annually? Doesn't matter, still good. :)

Though I will admit that their NA presilencer studs are fairly brittle..

That is why you step up to the RevII system right off the bat..The presilencer is massive.
Plus you know that you will eventually swap out that Sewing machine N/A engine for something with that has a massive turbo on it!...(Tim Allen grunt!)..So you are already set,exhaust wise.

im guessing between the age of 16-18? first or second car, first one being a honda? am i close?

my buddy had an 87 gxl with rb header to a not well fabbed y-pipe to a shitty ebay muffler which was no good by the time he put it on, so basically a straight pipe, it was horrible lol. at 3000rpms it sounded like a straight pipe honda hitting vtec hahaa. he put a generic muffler shop presilencer on and it sounds much more respectable, cleaner and the volume isn't annoying

I have been looking into the RB exhaust (now that i know that its just an abbreviation lol), they look good and seem to be well respected. It could very well be my final decision. I have shocks and wheels to get first. My car needs shocks in the worst way and my current wheels are paying for new shocks so next summer ill be looking harder into exhaust/intake. basic upgrades to give a good tone to go with the look.

Thats not a claim Joe, that thing makes my n/a straight piped 7 sound quiet.

Its not horrible...I have a unknown brand header straight piped to some huge cannon on my GTUS and ive grown to fall in love with it. Ive seen some of those honda boys give me an oh shit look when i rev it past 6k ha.

But from a bystanders point of view.. I like how everyone puts it..It is ungodly loud, almost retarded loud

FWIW, I just removed the straight pipe from my n/a and put in a bonez superflo system. It doesn't feel any slower either.. it does however feel much nicer - very quiet and the smell is gone!

I really feel like this the only way to go for a street driven n/a, but maybe I'm just getting old :)

Ive got a corksport exhaust on my 90 N/A and it sounds nice....Straight pipe from the "header" to the corksport cat back...I honestly do not know why my car needed 3 cats ahhaha (Minnesota has no emissions)

It will be unbelievably loud. If you drive on the freeway with it for a few hours, your ears will ring a bit when you get out.

Ryan, I'm not sure why mine is so loud, even with the silencer in there. But to the original poster, good luck, lot of good opinions in here.

I had a single exhaust on my 91FC3C and it was the Apexi (sp?) N1. I was able to just swap out it over a weekend with a friend of mine. Mostly just 9mm bolts all over the place and few donuts. However, it had no cat, and no resonators. It awfully loud and got a crap load of tickets because of it. (Cali laws suck btw for that and emissions). Stick to RB with the full set up. That one sounds nice. Or, if you can find it, Sparks brand. I had that on my 90 FC and it was nice and low during cruising, but when you punched it, it was nice and not overly too loud.
