Is it true that the subs that have been mounted vertical (facing up) in the storage boxes have poor sound quality and dont sound very good????? What do you guys who have done it think??

Ah actually vertical is the cone and magnet assembly, at a 90 degree angle to the floor of the car...

But all that aside...

I have only mounted subs parallel to the floor, or removed the spare tire and put them vertically there.

Replacing the storage bin or under the storage bin: You need to get very high power speakers that work well sealed (porting is useless in that area) in a tiny box. The JL 12W1 and 12W6 work great there, as well as the older Alpine 6012. I have had very poor luck using any other 10 or 12 inch speakers there and reproducing accurate bass. Yeah you can have boomy sloppy white trash bass, but with other speakers, but for Car audio competition quality bass, those are the only speakers to use in that location.

Giving up the spare tire... you can put just about anything in, as it horn loads with the rear hatch.

I did it in my car for a while, and it sounds horrible. The subs cancel out A LOT. I can go into a long explanation as to why if you really want to hear it, but just take my advice. You will not like how it sounds.

One of the best positions for speakers in an FC is in the hatch, firing straight up at the glass, or tilter slightly towards the back of the car.

a box the same size as the storage bins is too small for most applications. perhaps a soundstream exact or an eclipse titanium would be ok. simply increasing the size by raising the height will yield better results. unfortunately it will no longer look stock, but you also won't have to worry about things flying at you when you hit the brakes.

Actually, I made my box out of fiberglass, and it was about 1.5 cubic feet, and it only took up one of the storage bins.

But I still have to say this is the worst place to put a sub in our cars. The distance between the top of the storage bins and the roof of the car is just right to make frequencies between 30 and 80-100 Hz cancel out very bad. You will hear almost no sound in this range, no matter how high you turn up the volume, That range is where almost all bass frequencies are.

could anyone post pictures of enclosers and areas that they mounted there subs in and what they thought sounded poor and what they thought sounded good?????????

Unless you are a serious bass-head, a pair of good 8's in the shock towers will be plenty loud, and will sound very good.

For the best sound, the brand makes a big difference. You cant expect a Wal-mart sub to sound good, no matter how you mount it.. That said, the best sounding enclosure I have heard in an FC is a box in the hatch firing straight up at the back glass. Shock towers sound just as good, but you are limited to 8's or smaller.

The next best place would be firing at the back of the hatch area. It is not quite as loud as firing straight up at the glass is, and is a little boomier too, but it still sounds very good.

If youre wondering, I have had all of these configurations in my car. A pair of JL 12's each time. Those are my observations, and I am very good at noticing any distortion, etc in sound systems in a car.
