"stop" light on logicon

should the "stop" light in my logicon be turning on while i press the brake?

it didn't used to do this before, i changed to the round s5 tail lights and its been doing it ever since

it wasn't doing it before

RSOkinawa 04-13-04 12:08 AM

You can't be talking about the logicon. Logicon is the AC control unit.

I am assuming you meant the idiot light cluster up on the dash where the clock is...

As for the "stop" light, that probably indicates that one of your taillights is out.

This is why it only comes on when you press the brakes...

Better get it fixed before yo get a ticket ;)

Icemark 04-13-04 12:09 AM

The logicon is the climate control.

The idiot light/clock warning panel has a stop light on S4 cars.

you have a short in the wiring if all the brake light bulbs are lighting.

The stop light only comes on if there is a bulb out in the tail lights

Kenteth 04-13-04 12:09 AM

EDIT: nevermind

]v[akaveli 04-13-04 12:12 AM

thnx for the replies, whooooOOps ... but ya icemark, all my lights are working (my reverse lights never worked). i'm thinking it may be a short, how would i go about fixing it?

Kenteth 04-13-04 12:19 AM

crack open the idiot light cluster and start resoldering cold welds  I did this two years ago, and fixed the clock and the lights don't come on for no reason anymore :D I noticed that the clock faded out today... augh... guess this might be a normal maintance thing ~ every few years

cezonetheillest 04-13-04 12:20 AM

also it could be maybe that you are low on coolant. it might be the e-brake light though. cant remeber

the light that comes up on me is "stop"

There would probably be other bulbs out if it was the clock/warning panel needing re-soldering.

The Stop light bulb gets it signal from the CPU in the drivers kick panel.

So... either something is triggering it, or the CPU brake warning panel has a problem.

But the clock warning panel itself would be the last spot I would be looking at.

one thing i noticed when i installed my s5 taillights was that when i turned my car back on after installing the lights, 1 of my brake lights was out that i didn't notice before, either it went out and i didn't notice it, or something happened while i was installing the s5 lights and it shorted something out.

does that help any icemark?

Kenteth 04-13-04 12:27 AM

Do the upgraded suspension options include the wires in the brake pad squeeker thing that triggers a 12v- currentwhenit grounds the disc?

]v[akaveli 04-13-04 12:32 AM

i don't think i have upgraded anything, i have an 88 GTU

the light that comes up on me is "stop"

The "Brake" light comes on with the parking brake up, or low fluid in the brake master cyl.

The "Stop" light (only on the S4) comes on when the brake light warning panel in the CPU sees a short, or bulb being burned out.

How the "Stop" light works...

The White/Green from the stop/brake light switch, feeds in the CPU brake warning panel.

The brake warning panel then sends 12Volts on the green wire to the 5 brake light bulbs.

If any/all of the 5 brake light bulbs are not coming on, or you have bulb wires mixed up, the CPU sends 12volts to the clock/warning panel on the Yellow/red wire tiggering the stop light to come on.

So, I would double check at the tail lights that all the 5 brake light bulbs are coming on, and if they are, then the correct bulb(s) is/are coming on. It sounds like (if this just started happening when you changed tail lights) that you mixed up the brake and tail light bulbs/wires.

interestingly enough, I recently installed a set of s5 taillights as well.. all the bulbs are in working order and my stop light never turned on with the old s4 lights.. however, my stop light will now come on intermittently if I hold down the brakes for a few seconds.. A friend who also installed s5 tails in his s4 had the same thing happen.. he fixed it by cleaning the grounds.. I've been too lazy to bother with it for the time being.. if the grounds are okay and it still happens, I'd look into the tailight wireing harness.. my taillights came with a harness attached and so I didn't bother modifiying the original harnes to make the bulbs fit.. I just plugged it in.. I may just use the old harness if the problem doesn't go away

STR8BALLIN - R 04-13-04 03:01 AM

i was having the same problem

and at the same time I also new it was time for some new brake pads as mine where really low.
there was no break light outtage or anything. had brake pads replaced and mentioned off the cuff to my mazda guy about the stop light going on when i put the foot on the brakes and sometimes in hard corners. He told me that there WAS a sensor that causes the STOp light to light up when your pads are wearing thin as a warning.
Got in the car and havent seen the damn light come back:D :D

Kenteth 04-13-04 06:33 AM

i dunno... anyone seen anything of this in the FSM? I thought I saw a brake pad set at mazdatrix that had the sensor/grounding short in the brake pad squeeker thing... but maybe that was for FDs... or maybe an entirely different website...

There is not a electric sensor for brake pads. So your Mazda guy doesn't know what he is talking about.

Brake pads only have the mechanical plate, so that if the pads are worn you get the squeel.

Now your pads can be worn and you never add brake fluid, which would trigger the "brake" light. Again Low brake fluid triggers the brake light (as well as the parking brake being on).

And on some models, there is ABS, which will light if a Speed sensor fails.

But there is no electric brake pad sensor

why are you not using the S4 harness???

The S5 harness is wired differently.

That is your problem

]v[akaveli 04-24-04 11:28 PM

wow, today i found out what the problem was .....

it was bugging me out cuz i checked everything and all my lights were working but my "stop" light came on everytime i hit the brakes

it turns out that 1 of my brake light bulbs went out earlier today. a friend saw it and told me

do fc's tell u ur brake lights are gone before they physically go out? cuz i think that's what happened. that or either it was burned out and was somehow bridging the electricity over to the other side of the wire in the bulb

]v[akaveli 04-24-04 11:30 PM

thnx again to all the ppl that helped. icemark u were a big help, i checked all the shit u gave me input on. i got so mad i just said "Fuck it" and let the answer come to me :D

No, unfortunately our FC's are unable to predict the future...

:p:

Tattoovido 04-26-04 07:24 PM

I had similar prob after installing S5 tails on my 88 vert...turns out that the cause for my "stop light coming on"was that my small brake bulb in the middle of trunk had to be grounded. i just happened to stumble across this fix one day while changing a brake bulb..good luck

shiftnmadkwik 04-26-04 11:25 PM

yeah.. no brake pad sensor, however if your pads are reaally worn down, youll have extended alot of brake fluid and yoru resevoir might be low enough where it might trigger a brake fluid warning. im sure you checked that already though

Wankels-Revenge 04-27-04 03:02 PM

Oh crap that little idiot light only comes on when a brake light bulb is out? Mine comes on every time i hit the brakes. I know when my brake lights aren't lighting up whenever i press the pedal cuz the little light won't come on.......
