stock guages went out minus speedo(mech) and no its not the fuse

i just completed a turbo swap into my GXL and everything was working fine for the first 20 minutes. then i went to take it on the highway and pop, there goes the guages. so ithought, oh, just a fuse, so i stopped and checked the fuse, sure enough, so i replaced it they came back on and i went on my way. then about 2-3 minutes later it went out again. so ithink i have a short somewhere, but the big question is where? also, please dont tell me to search as i already have.

thanks

Replace the fuse, and check out when
it likes to pop. mine did that not too long
ago and it turned out to be a fouled
back-up switch that kept blowing my
fuse everytime I shifted into 5th gear.

thanks, ill have to try that.

Any chance you used a turbo harness on the engine?? instead of the stock non turbo harness?

I think the back-up switch is the same problem with mine. When I got the car the gauges didn't work. I replaced the fuse and it worked in the garage for a while, but while testing my reverse lights I heard a slight click and saw the lights flash a little. When I troubleshot it I moved the gear shift around 5th some and it popped again this time burning out the fuse. I would start there since it's an easy fix.

the back up lights use the same fuse (the Meter fuse) that the gauge's use for their main power.

This of course would be different than the light fuse used the luminate the gauges when the parking lights are on

yes, i did the swap right.

and yeah my illumination still works just fine. its been raining here, so i havent had a chance to try out the 5th gear thing. but the more i think about it the more i realize that it was when i shifted into fifth that they went out. ill let you guys know if its something different.

thanks for a ll the help

Exactly the problem I got when mine went out. Can you rebuild the reverse light switch or is it better to just replace it with another one?

mekanikal 01-05-07 05:24 PM

I just unplugged mine and everything works Ok
only problem is that my reverse lights are out
and it tells me to shift up on 5th gear .

If your'e cool with that, just unplug it.
If it's a turbo tranny it should be on the left side

WTF??

HAILERS 01-08-07 06:53 AM

I think the JSPEC transmissions only have two wires in the reverse/over the top switch where as the USA switch has four wires because it's a dual function switch.

So IF this is a JSPEC engine/transmission swap, that might be the problem. It could be you've the reverse wires going to the wires for the over the top circuit and popping the fuse because your putting a gnd on the meter fuse when you go to fifth.

If it's not a JSPEC transmission.....then forget this post.

dregg100 01-08-07 09:03 AM

no, its a-spec. so they are interchangeable?

HAILERS 01-08-07 05:33 PM

Probably. I'll take a look in the morning.

EDIT: The parts fische shows two seperate numbers.

Turbo: 1281-17-640

Non-Turbo: 8130-17-640C

If I were you, I'd take a look at the wires on the non turbo and compare to the turbo and also check to see if the threads are compatible. I don't know the difference but maybe tomorrow I'll look at the two and see what I can see.

Nope. Can't swap them. Totally different. See attached jpg. The big one is the turbo one.

dregg100 01-09-07 03:42 PM

ok, thank you all for your help
