Stereo Installation

I'm installing a Pioneer 6700 with a behind-the-dash ipod adapter. I'll also be replacing the speakers front and rear. I found a source to get an adapter plate, a pocket (because the new unit is smaller) and a replacement harness.

These parts are metra pieces 98-7599, 99-7500, and 70-7901 respectively.

My first question is: Where should the ipod adapter be mounted? anyone ever done one of these?

Second: I assume the speakers are in the doors & shock towers. Anything I should know about the speaker installation?

Third: Is the faceplate adapter necessary? How about the harness?

Finally: Any suggestions will be welcome.

This is a job I usually hate, because I don't enjoy standing on my head long enough to get a crushing headache.

2 speakers in rear strut towers, 2 in bottom of dash-one to the left of the steering column and one inside a speaker box that you have to dissasemble to get to it on the passenger side on bottom of dash, and depending on model you have there might be 2 in the doors as well, and if you have a convertable there are 2 speakers in each seat's headrest (4 all together). you have to run new speaker wire becuase the rx7's used factory amplifiers, and unless your really good at wiring and general automotive stuff thats what i would do. just run new wires or the speakers wont work. yes get the faceplate adapter unless you want a gaping hole above or below your cd player. and the harness is not really necessary since you have to run new speaker wire, just get some butt connectors and crimp all the wires together. as to mounting the ipod... not a whole lot of space to deal with. theres a little bit of space when you get the cd player/headunit/faceplate adapter below the cd player you could put it there, depending on how big the ipod is. really, i wouldnt even worry about the ipod and get an mp3 player... much easier..

Thanks.

already have the ipod, so that's not going anywhere. The adapter kits have a pocket that takes up the space below the new stereo, so I'm looking to put the ipod in there. The ipod converter has to fit behind the dash somewhere though - I hope I have enough space.

The speakers kind of threw me. I saw the two vents in the bottom of the dash but assumed that they were air vents (obviously I didn't look closely). After running the existing stereo and feeling that the door speakers were moving, I assumed that that's where they were.

You're saying that I should have four speakers up front and two in the back. My wallet hurts just thinking about it.

Running new speaker wire is something I had hoped to not do, but either way it's not a big deal.

I guess I'll plan a little extra time for this one.....

you don't have to run all the speakers. I only run the door and dash ones in front. Not the back ones.
