Hi guys,

My steering has always been really loose. meaning there is quite a bit of play in the steering wheel. i can move the steering wheel about an inch before the steering will actually turn the car, and I would like to fix it.

Can anyone give me any pointers on how to fix this problem? I've had this problem since day 1 of owning the car.

 

manual steering or power? Jack the car up in the car and remove the under body plastic then have someone move the wheel and see where the slop is, if its in the u joints in the column or in the rack itself.

 

it's power steering. when i get home later tonight i will check whether or not it's in the u joints or the rack. is this a common problem on the FC3s?

 

To my knowledge no it is not, not around here at least. One rx7 locally I have seen with sloppy steering is a 260k FB.

Now that I am thinking about it check your tie rods also, bad inner or outer can cause nasty slop.

 

yeah, the chassis only has 140k on it, with a jdm s4 motor in it. i'll go home and check those components.

 

well, i checked the tie rod ends, they are fine. they look like they are in really good condition with no give in them.

i will try to remove the plastic under guard and check there tonight or tomorrow.

 

i'm going to bump this since this problem is still here, and i havent really had time to work on the car. the steering wheel play is still there, i checked the tie rod ends and they are fine. any other suggestions?

 

You can check the steering column joints from in the engine bay, no need to remove the undertray.
Check the nut holding the wheel.

There are a limited number of check points in the steering system, in the time you've spent posting you could have looked at most of them.
