Starts well runs well until u floor it

Hi guys my 1989 fc3s was running mint when I wrapped it up for 1 year , so I up wrapped it, new plugs , new fuel, injector cleaner it started great was a ideling a bit low so I adjusted idle , and now when I drive it as soon as I I put it 3rd or 2 no and floor it it coughs and splutters , it can't be much , does adjusting idle change fuel/air mixture , could it be the plugs I'm lost any advice pleas help???? Thanks

misterstyx69 10-17-17 08:45 PM

start by pulling codes.

RX7 FD and Series 5 Error Codes

Bellboy7 10-17-17 09:15 PM

Pulling codes ??? sorry I haven't got a clue ??? how do I do that??

Rotary Alkymist 10-17-17 10:01 PM

You should check TPS ettings. s5 stop screw is sometimes mistaken for the idle screw. Is that what you adjusted? If so TPS settings have also been adjusted.

Bellboy7 10-17-17 11:03 PM

Yea I adjusted top screw, DAMM , I wouldn't no how to check or adjust TPS SETTINGS , it's not out by much how do I check & adjust tps settings????

Bellboy7 10-17-17 11:20 PM

I only turned top screw half a turn to the right , why if I turn screw back half a turn to the left won't fix it???? dam I need help

if you read the link it tells you how to pull codes,

Rotary Alkymist 10-18-17 01:36 AM

Apologies, I assumed that you were running a turbo. I forget if s5 n/a has idle screw or not.

Bellboy7 10-18-17 03:25 AM

I am running a turbo ???

insightful 10-18-17 07:46 AM

*rubs temples*

no?

you changed the plugs but you don't know if your car has a turbo? this is like the twilight zone.

probably got the spark plug wires in the wrong order when you put them back on.

to check/adjust the TPS there is many threads about it that should come up with a google search.

Rotary Alkymist 10-18-17 09:24 AM

haha, yeah, are those three question marks a typo?

FührerTüner 10-18-17 09:57 AM

Dont get owned by your fuel filter.

Bellboy7 10-19-17 05:03 PM

Yes I said it's a turbo . I changed plugs 1 at a time so they went back exactly in same position , surely if it was fuel filter it wouldn't start first pop and idle beautifully, also runs great on primaries but when I high rev or floor it it splutters , I tried turning top screw back to where it was it's a bit better ,BUT since I adjusted it WILL I HAVE TO RESET. TPS, I've been reading that thread on tps WOW it seems really complicated !!! frustrating , I'll just have to take it to a mechanic I guess , IS there anyway If i just keep adjusting top screw then take it for a drive and keep doing that until it comes right or do u have to use a volt meter ?? sorry if I'm asking stupid question , I have limited to zero understanding of motors or electrics ,, but I'm greatful for TIME & advice & appreciate ur HELP

Bellboy7 10-19-17 05:11 PM

ps I wish I never tried to adjust what I thought was idle screw, EVEN tho I had to keep foot slightly on gas while it warmed up, once it warmed up it ran like fine tunned LIGHTNING PULSE !! 13b Bridgeport turbo , secondaries snap ya head back,

You'd be surprised by the weird symptoms from a clogged fuel filter. I suggest changing it just to be safe, it only costs $10 and it takes about 15 minutes to change.

But regarding your second question, you will have to adjust your TPS (or at least check it) if you made any alterations to the throttle stop screw. Even if you put them back.

Rotary Alkymist 10-19-17 06:15 PM

Can you remember with certainty what the screw what clocked at? TPS settings are extremely sensitive. It can be your very own pandora's box if you're not careful.
If you CAN remember where is was and where it's at now then that should be the only window of settings use should be messing with.

However, if you have limited knowledge about throttle body settings/TPS settings and basic electronics then I wouldn't start playing with stuff. If that's the only screw you turned don't turn or adjust anything else.

+1 to fuel filter check and replacement. These things don't last long. You could cross off the list of culprits.

would it still start great & idle great if it had fuel filter problem??, ok I'll have a go at changing it , is that the one up under car by diff??

Yes. And if you dont know the last time it was changed, it probably needs to be changed anyways.

2nd gen fuel filter is near the drivers side footwell under the hood.

If thats not it, it probably has something to do with your TPS or the set screw you moved.

*EDITED* DONT FORGET TO CHECK YOUR FUEL PUMP SOCK TOO.

Bellboy7 10-20-17 07:16 AM

Awesome thank you so much for all ur guys advice

Bellboy7 11-04-17 04:30 PM

ok so finally change fuel filter , went to pull codes to check if tps was NARROW or open & no ENGINE light came up flashing codes wtf lol , funny thing was I took turbo intercooler off top and tried starting it Nothing, turned it over like 10 times put intercooler back on & it started straight away , so took it for a drive and fuck me secondaries kicked in perfect trough 2& 3rd so I stopped turned around tried a gain and back to lagging out , I'm reading up on learning how to check TPS resistance & settings as only thing I've adjusted is top IDLE SCREW, it use to run MEAN AS, still starts great & idles great and drives great under 3500 revs. PULLING MY HAIR OUT , I no it's not much I only touched TOP IDLE SCREW ARRRR

Rotary Alkymist 11-05-17 02:09 PM

Ok. You tried to start it without the intercooler? That is a funny thing indeed. I wouldn't do that lol. It's no surprise that it didn't start haha. I'm dying over here.

Explain how you pulled the codes. Did you ground the orange wire by the coils? It is in a two prong connector(sorry that is on 88). I'm pretty sure it's orange. You will not pull codes until you ground that wire.

Bellboy7 11-05-17 03:17 PM

Yes orangy wire in a green plug but my engine check light is isn't lighting up , I even changed bulb??

Rotary Alkymist 11-05-17 08:47 PM

Check ECU at pin 1D, 1E, 1F, and 1I(input ground) to ensure that you are measuring proper output voltages.

Bellboy7 11-05-17 09:53 PM

Shit u lost me there , what I put multi meter on wires from Ecu hat are the voltages man that's Beyond me, I full car with gas & drive , I can't even adjust Tps it can't be too hard but I don't want to make it worse , as car starts great, idles well and drives great on primaries and secondaries boost well too SOMETIMES , I live 1.30hr from a rotary shop I think I'll drive it there on primaries should be ok aye to Cruze 65 Kmh in 4 th . Could it be my leads they look ok maybe I'll buy new ones anyway
