Starts up, then stuts down. -Help-

Just found an '88 TII for a good price.

IT will start up, but shuts off after about 15 - 20 seconds. Wait awhile, and it'll do it all over again.

What is it?

SonicRaT 05-08-03 05:24 PM

Check for vac leaks and a faulty AFM.

Sojin 05-08-03 05:35 PM

have done that and its the AMF

blind 05-08-03 06:23 PM

with me it was a vacume leak

it would idle at like 3K and then blah shut off

GTIguy 05-08-03 06:34 PM

Had a similar problem, it was my AFM but it was shutting the car off after like 2-3 seconds.

The AFM has control over the fuel pump, if the AFM is faulty (not completing its circuit) it will shut the fuel pump off.

I think sonicRat helped me out last time. Thanks man.

SonicRaT 05-08-03 06:39 PM

Yeah, that problem is almost always AFM or vac leaks. Glad to be of service :)

jgrts20 05-08-03 09:54 PM

not to be dumb or something what is the AFM, i have this same problem but only does it the first couple of times then its no problem!! i will check the vac hose but i need to know AFM, sorry duh!! what does it take to replace this?

TheWrongMotor 05-08-03 11:34 PM

Air Flow Meter

After the filter. Before the throttle body.

If it starts then dies, it's a HUGE vacuum leak, not a small one. The AFM is below the filter housing if it still has that. You need to track it down to the turbo. If there is a big crack in the hose or not properly attached to the turbo, it will not hold idle. At least starting is a good thing.

TheWrongMotor 05-09-03 09:48 AM

Ok remember....

It starts and RUNS FOR ABOUT 20 SECONDS.

Then DIES.

20 seconds to fail from a vac. leak????

Seems odd. The 20 seconds, that is. Seems like it would only be a few seconds.

when i forgot to plug in the AFM (yea i know stupid of me) i was abel to keep it running for like 15 sec but i would not idle.

jgrts20 05-09-03 03:53 PM

thanx guys, i do still have the AFM in my car and i will check it out!! PEACE!!

jgrts20 05-09-03 04:06 PM

nope just check my car doesnt have that AFM anymore due to the cold air box!! it must be a vac. line!! PEACE!!

SonicRaT 05-09-03 04:18 PM

Uh. No. Your problem is BECAUSE YOU REMOVED THE AFM. Put it back on!

pbanks 05-09-03 05:11 PM

Im new and need some advise.88 vert is having a fit i dont no if shes getting oxygen. Its stalling and tries to die ,the idle goes below 1000 rpm .It all started when i was reving up the engine and then it started to like die.the car is completely oem, thank you

jgrts20 05-09-03 09:22 PM

i didnt install the cold air system it was on the car already when i bought it, so i really dont know if it does have a AFM would this be noticable with the box on or is it just a plate between the intake and throttle body?? now IM confused@@#!!

gergrx7 05-09-03 09:47 PM

dude i had this problem with me 87 and for me it was my plugs where in backwards check see if there in right

pbanks 05-09-03 10:28 PM

I know that the plugs are not in backwords because everything was fine an running very well until I are dumd*** wanted to rev up the engine and it all started im begining to wonder if it is my air flow meter or a short to it .I cant go by what the electrical chassis manual says because it says take it to the dealer with proper equipment

TheWrongMotor 05-10-03 05:00 PM

I'm sure glad could start a nice little thread for a couple of you to try to figure out YOUR problems.

I'll look elsewhere for anwsers to MY questions in the future.

Rxmfn7 05-10-03 05:04 PM

Yea guys, C'mon if you have a problem go start your own thread about it...

TheWrongMotor: When you start it and it runs for that 20 seconds, what RPM is it at?? Does it go up to the 3000rpm startup thing, and then shut off when it tries and goes back down to a normal idle?

blind 05-10-03 05:29 PM

you cant really miss the AFM its a huge metal box, lest the stock one is. and if its not there thats proabably the prob. it shold be directly under the airfilter or connected to the air filter somehow.

Cory Simpson 05-10-03 06:22 PM

If you made an cold air box then it won't have the stock air box. The AFM is the aluminum box that is behind your air filter, and it has a plug that goes in to the side of it next ro were there is a big 1/4 plastic looking circle.

Cory Simpson 05-10-03 06:25 PM

Ohh yes and I ment to say it won't run with out the AFM unless you have a stand alone ECU, or you have your engine carborated. And the only other way that it sould be malfuntioning is that it has just shorted out or you pissed on it. :D

TheWrongMotor 05-10-03 07:27 PM

I'm going to turn off my e-mail notification on this damn thread!

I, that's I, have had my heavily modded '87 TII since 1990, and KNOW where my damn AFM is.

Y'all have fun learning where stuff is under your hood. Maybe your cooter valve is screwed up!

Off to another forum for answers.

THANKS to those of you who DID try to help. :) I'll let you know what it is when I get another chance to look at the '88 TII I'm looking at buying.

Cory Simpson 05-10-03 09:15 PM

Ahh, I don't know why but I didn't realize that you were the thread starter, When you start the car can you keep it running by holding down the gas pedal, or will it die regardless. And if you have the time with the car you could try pulling the codes, and see what the engine says is wrong. That would probably point the problem out.
