Starting Problem
I have an s5 NA and I have just finished putting a new starter on. Now it starts when it is cold but it will not start when it is hot. It will only start after you wait for an hour for it to cool off. any help in diagnosing it will be greatly appreciated.
things checked: fuel pump injectors engine does not over heat no cat back at the moment just a bonez mp |
if it is not cranking when warm it is a bad starter...and not new.
|
won't a bad starter just will not start period? This one is really getting on my nerve.... it will only start when it has cool off please HELP ...... I have spent alot on the car trying to get it to work.
|
Anybody know what is wrong?
|
was the starter new, or new to your car? icemark knows what he's talking about. i'd pull the starter and have it tested.
|
is the car cranking over when warm or not???
If not, it is a bad starter. If yes (and you just were not being clear) it does crank over, but doesn't start/run when warm, there is a whole 'nother ball game to look at, but leaking injectors would be the first thing. |
yeah, if the engine won't start when its warm, then the first culprit would be leaking injectors causing the engine to flood when its off.
If the starter doesn't work when the starter is warm, take it back to where you got it from and demand some satisfaction. |
the engine turns like it is going to start and I have checked and cleaned the injectors and it is perfect, so what else could it be?
Thanks |
so it does crank over, it just doesn't start/run...
How were the injectors cleaned and checked? Has the TPS been adjusted lately? |
well actually I had my mechanic did the cleaning for me and I had the whole throttle body changed. But what kind of adjustment am I supposed to do? Please advice
|
well if the injectors were really removed and cleaned (and not just some crap run through them from the gas tank), then the next thing I would be looking at is that the TPS was adjusted wrong (with a test light or something) and the ECU was damaged.
I am also assuming that a compression check has been done??? |
so how are you suppose to know wether the ECU is busted or not.
|
consistent flooding, especially on an s5, is usually a sign of low compression...
|
hi Kevin, won't a low compression motor not have much power? I think mine still have power it just will not start after warming up and engine will just die after going into closed loop.
|
a low compression engine will run an ddrive fine, with normal power for the most part, just hav trouble idling and starting.
|
Dies in closed loop???????? Closed loop is when the car is not at idle but being driven down the street up until you slam the pedal down then it goes into open loop once again. Idle equals open loop. Open loop means the ECU isn't looking at the 02 sensor for help adjusting the fuel mixture. Closed loop the ECU is using the 02 sensor to adjust the fuel mixture.
Low compression is the/a major cause of a car not starting. Results in a flooding condition. A low rent fix is to make a fuel disable switch/cut switch. How to is somewhere on this site. |

but what would be the cause of the engine dieing after it has warmed up?
|
Could it be the ignition coils? I know that coils hate heat, and would certainly prevent the engine from starting if they were malfunctioning. Any more experienced members want to chime in?
