Starting my FC after sitting for winter....
i was wondering what kinda precautions i should take when i start my car for the first time after winter....
i didnt start it all winter, i pulled the EGI fuse out and cranked it a few times to get excess gas out of the motor, i was thinking of pulling the EGI out once more, cranking a few and letting the oil lube the engine, then putting it back in and starting it normally.... i know you guys have done this before, but this is the first spring i've owned the car after it's been parked.... i should add the car was parked for 5months, i've moved it forward and back every now and then to prevent flat spots on the tires, and kept the e-brake down.... any input?... thanx!... |
This was my first winter with the car parked too, I just grabbed a new battery and fired her up, I let it run for about 20 min. before I drove it just to make sure everything was running right.
As long as you take care of it, you should have no problem. Wrost thing you can do for our cars (not too sure about pistons) is start them for 10 min at a time while they are sittingthen sutting it down and leaving it for another few days/weeks. From what I understand that will not burn all the condensation out of the engine and it can lead to rusting on the inside (i.e - the same reason you might have rust in the oil fill neck). Sad to say my brother took mine out the day after I parked it ( left it at my moms house the whole time) came back and set the e-brake, now I have the worst rumbling ever when I go to stop LOL. Looks like new rotors for me. |
shit dude, sorry to hear about your 7....
yeah i took the precaution concerning the ebrake and all, i took the EGI fuse out to make sure all the gas was out of the combustion chambers so it couldnt settle and rust or do something as such a freak to nature.... hrm, hopefully more people will come in with tips, i'm starting it in a month or so, cant wait.... :) |
Tune her up if you haven't yet then start it and let her breath. :)
|
it's got new plugs, wires, the works....
just dont want to risk the motor in any sence, so i ask to be careful.... :P |
* Bump *
|
I'd shoot some fogging oil in the lower plug holes first, just to make sure everything is good and lubed. If possible, turn the crank by hand to get it all over the housings and all three faces of the rotor. Other than that, I don't know what more you could do. I guess clean gas if the tank was low when you went to store it.

I would say change the spark plugs...if you pulled the egi and just crakned it then the plugs are dirty...take them out and turn it over a few times. Then put the new ones in and start it up, it should fun great...also u might wanna get a new fuel filter. have fun

i changed it just before i parked it, but i gotta get some good 'ol 20W50 in there.... but i want to know if just cranking it without the EGI fuse in will be what i need to do.... it's only been sitting for 4-5months.... |
Just start it up in first with the oil that is in there. The oil pressure will rise rapidly and there will be no problems, unless the seals don't make compression.
I've had mine sit in the garage for 17 years during the winters and no problems in the spring. Let me rephrase that, in 1993 and 1995 it wouldn't start in the spring. Needed a little help with the ATF, then ok. |
:wallbash:
|
Maybe pull the plugs and clean them pull the fuse and turn it over a few times just to be safe then put the plugs back in and start it up.....and i think thats about it...let us know
|
sounds good guys, thanx again for your help!...
|
wait what's wrongwith the e-brake what's that whole issue about? I pull mine up everytime I turn it off........... I haven't driven with it on if that was your concern. Sorry to threadjack but I didn't htink it wa snew topic necesary.

I am concered about that shit too 87 trubo, my car has been parked with the e-brake on for the last 4 months and will remain like that for maybe another 2 months while I am in China. will this really screw up my car??
|
Just pull the EGI and crank it for a bit, then re-install it and start it up. Change the oil once you've run it for a bit. Running it for a bit before changing the oil may help get some more crud out than changing it right away.
I stored my car last year and again this year. I just had my dad crank it without the EGI every once and a while and keep the battery charged and it was fine, fired right up. I also made sure to have a full tank of gas before storing it, as it helps prevent rust from forming in the tank. If you didn't do that then you may want to change the fuel filter after a couple tanks of gas have gone through. My dad's stored numerous cars like I did, and he's never had problems with it. |
