Starting Issues
 

I have been given a rx7 this week an 86 and it doesnt start. My uncle is the person who gave ti to em and he said that it runs really good and everything is good about it except that it wont start most of the time. It will run and when you park it wont start back up. But if you wait and come back it will start again. And its not the battery because he has tried different batterys. And it will crank but wont turn over. I was just wondering what you all might think it is. I am looking for a good shop around here to put it in sometime soon but until then i was hoping it might just be something simple. Thanks in adavance.

i've heard that when these engines get tired, they first get hard to start when hot. also, they loose compression when hot, so you may be low on compression when cold and when hot you don't have enough to start. ever try push starting it?

Well i have been asking around and it might be low compression so i am going to do a check of the compression this week sometime. Hopefully it wont be too low but we will see.

Older engines tend to flood when hot. Good news it is simple. Open the hood, locate the fuse block near the drivers side strut tower and remove the "EGI COMP" 30A fuse, if you don't have a cover on your fuse block, which has the labels (see the sticky - FAQ for FC) it's the one closest to the engine. This turns off the fuel pump. Turn it over to clear slight flooding. Reinstall the fuse and start.

Im really hoping i can fix this easy and not have to rebuild the motor or anything like that for awhile atleast, but i think i might look into installing a fuel cut out switch since it seems to fix alot of what i am going through. But i really dont want to lose this car i hope it is simple. (Praying the compression comes back decent atleast and not getting ready to blow or anything crazy) It runs really good though.

the good thing about the rx-7 is that once u learn how do deal with these engines, these cars will last a long time.. when i first got my rx from my friend, i am glad he went through these steps with me. nothing major, but all just unorthodox. reading the faqs helped a lot as well. after you get used to the ins and outs of the rx, itll just keep runnin smooth..
