Starter Interlock Switch
 

Hey guys. I looked under the dash by the clutch pedal, and I could not find it. Anybody know where the fool switch is? The interlock does not work on my 87 TII. Thanks all, and have a good day!

In the free manual at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com in section 5 , page 5-30, there is a picture of it. On mine it was located on the drivers side of the clutch pedal. It had a plunger on it. When the pedal was depressed the plunger fully extended making a internal switch. I ripped mine off after the plunger part failed and have been as happy as a pig wallowing in mud. I suggest the previous owner of your car did the same. Oooops. I just realized that the 87turbo that I aquired does not have that feature either. Gotta check and see if someone connected the two wires together or perhaps that feature was not applicable to certain early models. Just joking with you with the ref to the manual.

Just checking...if you do that, you can start your car in 1st and reverse (and neutral, of course)....but you'll GO, right? I was thinking of doing something like that for a remote-start thing.

You'll be able to stand outside the car, put your key in the ignition and start the car. Won't have to climb in the car, depress the clutch, turn the key and then start the car. I missed something in your question but the above describes the situation. Some CLOWN decided that the car should have a switch on the clutch in the start circuit so that you would not accidently have the car in gear and run your kid over when you turned the ignition on. Poor reasoning as far as I am concerned.

I didn't think the RX-7 had a neutral safety switch. If so, you'd need the clutch depressed to start it, right? Mine starts without the clutch depressed just fine. Matter o' fact, a few weeks ago, RXTASY was looking at my car, and I started it in gear. Thank goodness I have good reflexes!

There are two neutral safetys, one on the tranny and one on the clutch of a FC. The one on the clutch is interlocked with the starter, but the one on the tranny only tells the computer weither or not the car is in gear for the 3000 rpm cold start.

That doesn't explain why I can start w/o my clutch depressed. If the switch fails (like it did in my MR2), the car won't start. Did they not put those in the 86-88 cars or something?

I can't start my 88 or 87 without the clutch *ALL* the way down.

The way the were supposed to be when the car left the factory was that the starter interlock switch was in FRONT of the clutch pedal---it is a black switch body with a long white shaft,when you depress the clutch pedal the white shaft is pushed in closing the switch.This switch has a 3 pin connector(but only 2 wires).If you have cruise control,there should be another switch on the driver's side of the clutch pedal,called the clutch switch,which disengages the cruise control when you press the clutch pedal.This has a 2 pin connector with 2 wires.The plunger is pressed in when the clutch pedal is in its normal position,and when you press the clutch pedal down the plunger comes out thus opening the switch.

Maybe it got stuck in the closed position so that its connected all the time? I guess that could happen. My 88 has the switch and so does my 90 parts car.

I don't need to push my clutch in to start my TII?

Yep. Just got home and looked. The one on the front is black and has a plunger. There is a black covered harness that comes back towards the driver. Mines unpluged and the mating harness is jumpered. Also the switch on the front of the clutch pedal which controls the cruise control, is disconnected on my car. Thats the one that had a bad plunger on it. Depressing the clutch on my car has no effect on the operation of the cruise control, due to that. Its not worth the money. Wreck yard someday. No rush. RXTASY, just look under the dash at the switch on the front of the pedal. Follow the harness back almost a foot. See if somebody disconnected it and jumpered the mating plug. One wire black and red the other black and green.
