Start car w/out clutch depressed?

Is it possible? I did it with my DSM, i just yanked out the clutch interlock switch. I don't want to press in the clutch to start it. I always leave the car in neutral.

1987RX7guy 08-07-03 10:34 PM

your that lazy?

Dvst8 08-07-03 10:35 PM

I never did have to step on clutch to start the car..

Wanked_FC 08-07-03 10:41 PM

its nothing to do with laziness, A) its easier on the car and clutch, B) i'm putting remote start in my 5 speed.

rx7raca 08-07-03 10:57 PM

i dont have to push in the clutch either...is this stock?

Bigretardhead 08-07-03 11:15 PM

my car is screwed up right now, and I don't have to anymore. :)

T2R7 08-07-03 11:21 PM

i had an old '81 Plymouth Horizon TC3 and that started without the pedal depressed. It was a completely gutted FWD beater rally car. :-)

Its considered instant death on some engines, when you have the clutch pressed in when starting. Some pressure plates are up to the 2100LB range, so its like putting 2 tons on the end of you E-shaft and thrust bearings.

I think it would be a great idea to disable the clutch switch somehow. Does anyone know why Mazda didn't make it so when you press in the clutch the cruise control shuts off? The computer goes into a crazy frenzy and redlines my car if I forget to turn off cruise (someone pulls in front of me).

First gens start up without pressing the clutch. I wonder why Mazda changed it on 2nd gens?

My old RX-7s cruise control would turn off when I pressed the clutch or tapped the brake. Maybe something is wrong with yours?

My FC starts without the clutch in as well....

digitalsolo 08-08-03 12:48 AM

Mine also starts that way. It also seems to disable the cold start fast idle cam when I start it that way-

Grey_Ghost_#7 08-08-03 01:13 AM

I believe that the later cars made it necesary to push the clutch in to start.

I know that the earlier FC's don't need this... 86-87? I rember reading that somewhere can't member where or what the cutoff date was for this... ?

ramello 08-08-03 01:40 AM

i just did a complete engine and drivetrain swap on my car and in the process of wiring up the new turbo tranny into what used to be an automatic car i ran a wire from the starter to one of the wires in the ignition and in the writeup i was working off of it said if i wanted to use the interlock switch i had to run the wire to the switch and then from the switch to the ignition....i duno if that leave any ideas

MaTT_FoULk 08-08-03 01:52 AM

I believe only '86 FCs start up with out depresssing the clutch.

Grey_Ghost_#7 08-08-03 01:53 AM

hmmm? I'm a bit confused?

Isn't the interlock stuff for Autos only?

jacobcartmill 08-08-03 04:00 AM

all FC's have a clutch switch. you *should* have to push in the clutch on every FC to start the car.

edit: maybe its only 87-up

all i know is my 87 turboII had a clutch switch.

Juan 08-08-03 06:06 AM

My 87 GXL only started up when the clutch was pressed in. Could this be one of those weird random Mazda things like aluminum hoods & rear seats?

SonicRaT 08-08-03 06:11 AM

It's 87 and up, and why is having the clutch pressed in while starting so much more worse than when it's running?

Its not the clutch switch the stops is from starting. Its the starter interlock switch. Trust me. I just jumpered mine so I dont have to push in the clutch.

If you look down at your pedal, there two sensor that have plungers on them. The one farthest away from your firewall will be depressed when you are off the clutch pedal. This one is the clutch switch. The one closest to the firewall is the starter interlock switch. That plunger has to be pushed down in order for your car to start. If you want to bypass it, follow the wiring to a big white plug. Unplug the interlock switch and youll see two female spade connectors in there. Just connect two male spade connectors onto a short strand of 10-12 AWG wire and insert the two end into there.

I was wondering that myself, but then he said 2100lbs = 2 tons? I kind of discredited that statement right about there :)

robvas 08-08-03 07:14 AM

Many dealers claim 'crankwalk' on the late model DSM's is because of holding the clutch down too much, or having too heavy of a clutch in the car.

White_Seven 08-08-03 07:31 AM

All I know is that my 86 GXL doesn't need the clutch in to start, and that makes me happy! heheh

My88Se 08-08-03 09:49 AM

I really don't mind. Sort of an anti theft device if ya think about it.
