Sputtering???

I just purchased a 87 rx-7. It has a newer rebuilt in it. I noticed something that i figured i would ask someone about. My car has this problem when your cruising around 2500-3000 rpm. Sometimes it will kinda jump and lundge. Also sometimes when i am stopped at stop light it will idle low around 500 rpm or so and pretend like its going to die. I first thought it might be a fuel filter or pump but i only notice the problem when cruising or stopped. I also thought it might be my cat clogging. On my last car this is kinda how the whole thing started. I think a more possible reason is that some choke or something is malfunctioning. If anyone has had a simular problem or has any suggestions, let me know. My AOL instant messenger name is pktrusty. thanks

Hey, I have the same problem, I think. Here's my story...
It usually starts to happen only after about an hour or two of highway cruising. It only seems to be affected if I accelerate, otherwise it seems to do fine. When I push in the cluctch and rev, it refuses. It sputters badly and wants to die.
I once thought it might be the cat, but I can't be sure since I haven't removed them.
One theory that seems a little more sound is the fuel filter. I changed my inline filter and it was terrible. My fuel tank has a lot of sediment in it. However, upon driving the next trip, it still sputtered. I will change my in tank filter and see how that works, but in the mean time I'm going to run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in each tank of gas.

I hope this helped. I notice that it's about 2 months lag, but I just started to research this more intensly now and noticed your post. If anything works out for you, let me know.
