There is a cable that runs from the transmission up to the speedometer. If it gets broken or disconnected, the speedometer (and power steering) will stop working. First, check both ends. The cable runs up the firewall, and if you've been poking around with the brake booster or fuel filter or anything in that area, it's possible to disconnect it from the back of the speedometer (ask how I know). Pull the instrument panel off, see if the cable is connected. If it's connected there, and connected on the transmission, you probably need a new cable. Ask in the "For sale" section, I'm sure someone will send you one cheap.

when i bought my 87 rx the speedometer wasn't working, the cable at the tranny was lose and its probly not connected at the speedometer. i'm not sure if your friend's is cable or electric but theres only a few things that can go wrong.

P.S looks like syonyk beat me to the typing... so how do you know?
