spark plugs fouled to SH*T.. and poor mans compression test

did a poor mans compression test today and got 3 big ole' fat healthy swooshes:gay: , and hadn't noticed the plugs until after i was done with the test and found this.http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/...sparkplugs.jpg

i thought it was pretty damn bad and decided it would be best(no sh*t) to change them out. anyone else get plugs like these? they should only be a couple thousand miles old.

Molotovman 06-24-12 07:56 AM

Doesn't look bad to me, a wire brush with knock most of that carbon off. Do you pre-mix or run the OMP? What's your driving style?

K-Tune 06-24-12 12:08 PM

Old plug looks great to me. Keep driving it.

KaLo_FC 06-24-12 12:31 PM

dosent look bad at all... wirebrush and a shot of brake clean and back on the road! :)

misterstyx69 06-24-12 02:53 PM

brush them off and reuse them or keep them for spare.
here, look.they are not as bad as some of the regular signs of fouling:

i mostly changed them out for my own peace of mind.. i just didn't want to throw those back in.

i have been having this weird starting issue where it starts right up, AWS, idle drops, then dies. i have to bounce the throttle for a couple seconds until it holds idle.. thought it might have been plugs fouled from running rich. but am now swayed towards MAF or TPS adjustment

cone_crushr 06-24-12 11:33 PM

Actually could be a thermowax adjustment issue.

beachFC 06-25-12 07:30 PM

I thought that, but kinda ruled it out since the problem just came out of nowhere.. like one day it happened, and never stopped. Also, I'm leaning more towards TPS since sometimes exiting the highway it will to the 1200 to 1500 idle jump.

I know how to adjust tps, but don't have a meter to know whether I'm doing it right

efushi 06-25-12 07:57 PM

i have the same exact problem come up BeachFC and havent attempted to resolve it yet, keep me posted heh

beachFC 06-25-12 10:56 PM

also, i have no clue how to fuck with any of that thermowax, cam roller??, fast idle cam??? shit :(

beachFC 06-25-12 11:57 PM

here is a video(i don't know what the hell happened, but it came out horribly shitty).. i was kinda trippin, because usually it dies right at 0:30 seconds in the video.. and i mean usually, as in EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME except in the video... VERY fuckin weird :(.. i was just messing around with the throttle right where it would have to be adjusted from, maybe i accidentally adjusted it kinda correctly?

on cold starts the car used to go straight up to 3k exactly, and then fall to 1.5k and slowly trickle down as the car warmed up. now it goes to around 2.8k and then falls to 700, and then just dies out. And then on the second try, it starts right up, and usually holds a good idle..

the idle IS a little crazy. it's different at every single red light or stop sign.. anywhere from 300 rpm to 1500 rpm, but 70% of the time stays between 500 & 800

this is a video of a cold start. it usually dies after AWS, but decided not to purely out of spite >:l

have you played with anything, unplugged/replugged anything recently before this started happening?
did you hit anything? let a woman drive your car? lol
get a meter and check ur tps properly in accordance with FSM.

beachFC 06-26-12 02:02 PM

Nope, The only thing I did recently was take the MAF off and see if anything was wacky in there, but that was well after the problem arose.. and everything seemed fine in there.

I just got a CEL last night for tps.. sooo I definitely need to adjust that. Sucks, because I'm horrible at things like that

beachFC 06-29-12 02:40 PM

Anyone?

cone_crushr 06-30-12 12:29 AM

Yes, that's how we all start. Then we either download a copy of the FSM and LEARN, pay a shop to fix it, or hang around the forum wishing for a miracle...

This indicates to me that your thermowax is not operating correctly.

The other info indicates that your TPS is out of spec or broke.

First thing to do is verify the thermowax is doing what it should. The thermowax needs warm coolent running throgh it to allow the idle to drop below 1000. If your car is cold and the idle drops from 3k to 700 right after the AWS stops then it is stuck in the warm position.

The tps can get out of spec in time. It could be because of several reasons. Sometimes you can readjust it and sometimes it is just broke. You have to try to dial it in and see if you can.

uhhh, not hoping for a miracle o_O . simply searching for input, which i have received. i'm not retarded, i've tried multiple things to fix it, tps, maf, grounds, wiring, etc. i guess i have to take it to a shop..

yeah, after a few weeks of searching 7 year old threads, i've concluded it can only be a few things(as stated^^^)
