He's spent over $10,000US equivalent putting that body kit on his car.&nbsp You wanna pay that kinda money to do that too?&nbsp You realize it costs more than the car itself???

InfiniIIIREX 04-19-02 08:15 PM

Did he really pay that much? I think he got the front for a little over a thousand and he prepped most the car for painting and the paint cost like another thousand. Where would $8,000 be going to?

RETed 04-19-02 08:17 PM

It's not JUST the front.&nbsp Who wants to change the bumper and leave the rest of the car stock?&nbsp Really, the car should be totally repainted.&nbsp Last time I checked, it costs at least $2000-$3000 to do a total repaint job from most auto body shops.&nbsp You're halfway there.&nbsp Add body work to add all the body kit parts on - this easily adds a thousand or two onto the bill...you're getting very close to the $10k mark by now...

Yeah it would probably be that much over here in the U.S. but I think he kind of got a discount on all the work since it was friends doing it. Yes, it would easily be 10 grand over here for all the work. So just imagine if you rear end someone again with that front on! I would probably hang myself.

Edpro 04-19-02 11:59 PM

I would go with RETed on this front cost 1.500 alone on my car paint did myself well over 4.000 with trick work all small stuff 1.200 and I still have motor work to do front is with discount rear some love some hate lol...
go for it if you want a rx7 thats not the same has everbody else... Rear would have been another 1.500 to do cheap price
Take care my input

soul assassin 04-20-02 01:45 AM

you don't want to know how much i paid for everything but it was well under 2k :D i do agree with Retd though if you had someone else do it it would be atleast 8k. the front alone is close to 2k body work, flaring the fenders, welding all the holes shut, custom fibeglass hood, throw some custom paint in there and boom the price goes sky high.

kamisama12 04-20-02 01:51 AM

some personal advice make friends with a mechanic get to know the people in the shop and get things at price of what the pay. im not even going to tell you how much i could get parts for upgraded turbo's and port jobs

Gefunk 04-20-02 09:35 AM

Again REted doesn't know jack

Wankel7 04-20-02 11:11 AM

Funk, man you have something against Reted?

Just wondering?

James

Green 04-20-02 11:27 AM

wow Funk.. Be careful..

Did you hear what soul assassin said ? it would at least cost about 8k to do it... HE only paid 2k because he did most/all the work himself...

Ted sounds like (to me) he is talking about having a shop do all the work.....

I fail to see how his estimate was THAT wrong ? ~8k and ~10k is very small difference to me.... and that's what it is.. AN ESTIMATE :)

MY money says if he wanted to do the same thing to his car... it would start to add up to 12k because of complications, lack of parts, and shop ripping a new hole :)

and BTW, I would spend money on mods and such instead of body kit.. you'll just wreck it some more...

Node 04-20-02 11:42 AM

oh funk, you silly boy
Ted has forgot more about RX-7's than you'll ever know

I think we need to find someone in Japan that can get some of these body pieces for cheaper and ship them out. The FC2000 front seems to be a little over a thousand over there, plus it coudn't be more than like 200 bucks to get it shipped to the US. This wouldn't be a bad deal at all seeing as you will pay well over 2 thousand for the front from rxecret7.com (or so I have heard) Whoever the contact would be, he could make some serious money charging a little bit for his time, since the prices would still be a hell of a lot cheaper than anything I think we will ever see from a big American importer. Just a thought.

soul assassin 04-20-02 04:15 PM

it would be ATLEAST 400 for shipping, trust me tried it already and no one wants to fork out the dough for shipping, and depending on the yen rate is how much the bumper costs

BadBoy 04-20-02 04:50 PM

good thing i live on GUAM, and we are very close neighbors to japan hehe

Fred

InfiniIIIREX 04-20-02 08:32 PM

Alright my bad, I guess I have never imported something big before so I didn't really know the shipping rates. Alright well the price of the front directly from RE Amemiya seems to be anywhere from 133,200± to 148,000± so that should be about 1,020.68 to 1,134.09 US dollars. So with Soul Assasin's estimated shipping cost plus whatever the guy would charge for his trouble would be about $1500, still cheaper than the price without the added shipping from Japan from rxecret7.com, which would be over $2000 altogether. I don't think it's a bad deal for that front at all.

shipping

Hehe. Ted remembers this...I once bought an R-Magic front (the same one Soul Assassin used to have) and had it shipped from Japan to Hawaii. I specified that it be shipped by boat, but someone in Japan got an air shipping estimate and found it to be SO cheap, that they would surprise me by sending it via air. This was A Very Bad Thing, because whoever got the quote didn't realize that for big items like body kits, shipping cost is based on box dimensions, not straight weight. So, to my dismay, and despite my specific instructions to send the kit via boat freight, the day after my kit was supposedly picked up I get a phone call syaing my front had landed...at United Airlines...on a PASSENGER FLIGHT.

Yes, they tried to charge me $1521 for shipping on my box which was roughly the size of your average soda vending machine. Of course I flipped out. After numerous calls, complaints and bitching, United Airlines stepped in and offered me $600. I was pissed, but what the hell - I got the box overnight.

Now I just go through local freight consolidation companies and let them arrange the shipping.
