Solid Front Diff Mount
Anyone just weld their broken front diff mounts and make them solid? Bad idea? Good idea? Obviously its going to transfer more noise...
Read a bit more. Seems like a bad idea. Metal fatigue is not your friend...
Flex is necessary.
Install a new front differential mount, along with a pinion snubber. Problem solved. How to: Pinion Snubber Install https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...Pinion+snubber Good reference pics. ^ |
Mine broke & was welded (previous owner). Definitely a bad idea
It hasent been said yet but its fine to do if you have solid diff and subframe mounts... and it wouldnt be a bad idea to run a bead along the sides where the dif mount mounts to the subframe that seems to be the weak spot... so in conclusion its fine with solid mounts
I used to hear a thump I figured it was the rear diff mount, so when I went to install a "new" one I noticed this. Previous owner welded a long, bent bolt to the mount and then to the subframe. This can't be good...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...e/P7150005.jpg it also turns out the thumping I was hearing was a bad trans mount. My thump is gone but what about this odd welded bolt? |
haha that looks like a rotary engine tension bolt!
some drifters do similar to keep the diff mount from constantly ripping, but i can't envision that bolt lasting indefinitely.
I plan to track the car (not drifting) should I cut it?
i would, it's going to eventually break anyways. install a pinion snubber and be sure the mount is in decent condition.
Running new rear diff mounts (the ones that press into the 'ears') will help reduce the energy transferred to the front diff mount. Running delrin mounts in the ears will reduce it even further.
The only downside is those that have the center camber adjusting link will find it useless since flex is nearly eliminated by the delrin mounts. |
meh, the competition mount and snubber is fine for moderate to even highly abused cars, launches and snap traction are what generally kill the subframe mount ears before that gives it up.
+1 pinion snubber!
Cut the threads short and droop the subframe- easy. There is even a divot to tell you where to drill on the body. |
I had already planned on doing the pinion snubber.
I'm still interested in trying the semi-solid mounts that (Brandon?) is making, but have had little contact with him :-/. |
