Solid corner seals?
I will soon be rebuilding a 1991 gtu's motor, and have a question about side seals. Yes, I searched, but found very little info. My question is, "What is the difference between stock and solid corner seals?" Obviously they are physically different, but what is the end result? I plan on staying na with this motor, where are these corner seals beneficial, like in what kind of application would they be used? Besides large porting, say, can they be bad for an engine? My question is because they are much cheaper than regular ones, but woulden't they, if nothing else, just cause more rotating mass? I don't know what the pro's and con's are. anyone?...later:)

they're probably cheaper only because they require less machining to make than the stock ones with the rubber insert. they're obviously going to be stronger, though i never heard of a corner seal breaking from street use... though i can easily break a well used one between my pinky and thumb.
i also remember reading that the rubber inserts in the non-solid corner seals help them seal better at lower RPM's and at idle. |
