so stupid!! i lost my RX7 key!!

ok, so i was working today.. and i looked at my set of keys i have on me. i noticed that i had one key missing.. i wasnt sure which one at first, until i noticed my RX7's key was missing... i went home to look around but no luck... i'm so sad guys... any help? lock changes>? ignition key changes?

:wallbash: :pat: :tear:

88t2romad 07-08-08 05:16 PM

any other rx7 key should work.....sad but true.

Seriously though. I think you can contact the dealership and give em the VIN and get a key made. That may be a wives tale though.....worth a shot!

katkaroto 07-08-08 05:32 PM

thanks guys, but that would mean a "lock" lock smith? not ace hardware right? good thing i went to go double check my car, i left the driver side unlocked... dbl whew...

13Brandon 07-08-08 06:17 PM

i lock my key in my car a lot at work.. but i have a friend there with an rx7 too and his storage box key works perfect on my doors haha..

ericgrau 07-08-08 06:35 PM

You can in fact go to the dealer with a VIN and get another key made. I dunno if they'll want other info too, give them a call and see.

Other RX-7 keys only work when the lock is dirty. Clean the lock and you won't have to worry about some schmo trying it with his key.

jhoj435 07-08-08 06:57 PM

Other RX-7 keys? Hell, mine opened with a screwdriver....

Hypertek 07-08-08 07:17 PM

when i had my 240sx, my friend also had one, our keys worked on each others cars lol.

well im not to totally sure this would work on rx7's but my friend lost his supra keys on day.. so we took out the passenger side key hole and passed it over to the lock smith.. and they made us a copy totally works with the engine and all

im assuming that the rx7 uses only one key to use on the door and ignition
that if you make a copy of the door key then you should be in the safe zone

Cost me about 106.00 to get locksmith to drive to the prescription....the ignition was changed before on the car so took little longer....

I think that there are so many hundreds of the same keys floating around the world for every car ever produced. The manufacturer just tries to ship the cars to different parts of the country for "security"...

I remember back in the day my mom had an Olds Cutless. We came out of the grocery store one day and a little old lady was in it. Got inside, started it up and was about to drive away until my mom yelled to her. Turns out she has the exact same make model and color car parked one section over... Kinda scary really.

my key doesn't work in any of my friends rx7's it will go in but not turn.

Reminds me of a few years back, we were coming out of a store, and pressed the trunk realse button on the remote. And were surprised to see not only our trunk pop open but the car next to us. We unlocked our car and that one unlocked. It was kinda of funny trying to get that car unlocked with us in our car.

And just go tot he Dealer if the locks have not been changed. They can pull up your vin number and make a key for you, i had them do this to my other car not to long ago.

katkaroto 07-09-08 12:35 AM

how much will it cost at the dealer ship? and my friends said, bring my title and vin...

It works.

Howru 07-09-08 01:22 AM

I just got an ignition key from the dealership around January. My original (now the spare) didn't want to work with the storage bins/glove box.

They needed my current registration and picture ID, and cost me ~$50 IIRC.

katkaroto 07-09-08 08:12 AM

hmm, anyone got a spare?

well, i'll probably try to do a search and rescue... but if all fails, i'll go to the dealership... i'd probably call them first...

BrettLinton7 07-09-08 08:49 AM

There's a sick turbo2 that lives near me that my key works in. He's watching his back :D So seriously, you could probable round up a few keys from local people and one probably could work.

p4nc7 07-09-08 09:27 AM

Dealership definitely works, cost me $40 for a new key for my 7.

Bring picture ID, your title, and VIN.

Texas_Ace 07-09-08 10:07 AM

Wow, that much?

They like there keys, i got a key cut for my toyota truck for $8 a few months back

me: well, the forum guys say our 2nd gen keys tend to work for other 2nd gens.
