smoking if idles for a few minutes

My car does not smoke at startup, or under load. It will smoke if it left to idle for 3 or 4 minutes (sitting at a red light for instance).

THe car is a s4 TII swapped into a 87 GXL. I have removed most of the emissions. I still have the evaporative control system.

I am not sure if it is related, but the charcoal canister has way more oil coming out of it than it should (it leaves the frame rail oily after an hour of driving).

Any ideas on this?

Thanks!

Rob

Uh, there shouldn't be any oil coming out of the charcoal canister.

how is your crankcase vented? Normally it is vented from two points on the oil fill tube to the intake (between the AFM and turbo). If you removed your emissions, these may have been capped or what not. You are probably building up too much pressure in your crankcase, which is causing your smoking and oil leaks.

Crankcase is vented properly. I have the stock crankcase venting and evaporative control system.

If you've got oil on that side of the bay, you may have a leak at the turbo. It would probably smoke all the time if that were the case.

It is actually leaking out of the charcoal canister.

I am not sure if the leaking charcoal canister is related to the smoking at idle problem or not.

As soon as you give it some gas, the smoke goes away.
