smoke from dash, lost alternator, hot wires after jumper cables touched

My problem first started after I jump started my car and while still attached to my car the cables touched. my battery is relocated to inside the car so i was jumpering off of a positive terminal i put in the engine. I am assuming my problems are related because it never did this before.

Now, my alternator totally stopped putting out voltage, smoke comes out from the drivers side of the dash with the car running and some wires were getting hot by the inside fusebox. I unplugged the large connector by the fuse box and that took care of the hotwires problem, but the car wont run without it plugged in. I have quite a bit of extra's wired into the car but almost everything is soldered and shrink-wrapped or atleast well taped.

I plan on pulling the dash to find and fix the problem as soon as i get the chance but if anyone else has run into anything similar and could give me a headstart in the right direction that would be great.

thanks,
-Robert

Well I was able to fix the hotwires and smoke issue by pulling the cigar lighter fuse for the time being. The fuse was all melted but never popped. I'm assuming i pinched a wire when I swapped my dash, so maybe it wad unrelated or the jolt from the cables was the last straw for that wire.. regardless time to pull the dash on my next free weekend, but for now atleast she's back to life!
