search, by taking off the smog pump your 5th and 6th ports as well as your VDI will not open up.. So you will loose about 25hp. Unless you rig up an electric air pump with an rmp switch.

On a S5, it's not worth taking the air pump off due to the above listed reasons. Far too much on that car is driven by the air pump pressure.

I've got an S4 and am wondering the same thing. Can I? Should I? And what will it take/cost?

SEARCH damit.

You can take it off on a S4. It cost nothing.

more importantly what do you think you will gain?

Your cats will go poo shortly after. Get a full exhaust with no cats if you can.

Advantages of taking it off (S4, see above for comments on S5):

You get more room to work on things (not that much is over there).

Disadvantages of taking it off:

You'll probably fry your cats.
You won't pass an emissions inspection.
You should get a dual belt setup on the alternator.
You load up the water pump bearings in one direction (as opposed to the more or less even pull with the air pump).
You can't use the air pump for 6th port actuation.
