SmartKey on a FC?
 

I dont know if any of you have seen the new prius, but it has a cool feature called smartkey whenever you are within a certan distance of your car, the doors unlock, when your outa distance they lock themselvs when you get in the car all you have is a start button. no key.

I've been searching all over the play tonight trying to find somewhere/somebody to buy this from, and if so how much.

My question is Has anybody ever thought of doing this on a FC, or any other car for that matter? For the wireing experts; How difficult would this be to install?

Just putten it out there, Im lookin for better ways to protect my car aside from having 90 different kill switches in my car.

Are you too lazy to use an alarm remote?

That feature has always distrubed me. I don't like the idea of a car unlocking when I am simply near it since there are many times I walk by the car in a public place and have no intention of opening it (hauling stuff, showing the car off, car shows, walking up and down my driveway, helping someone else lift something in the parking lot, etc. etc.).

If you REALLY want to go there, then it's not fundamentally hard to do. There are plenty of companies out there selling the components in module form and you can put together your own system if you have a little electronics knowledge.

Don't bother considering taking the system from a Prius. The car is CAN bus equipped and all this runs through the bus.

I agree, but if you are seriously contemplating doing this the electronics is the simplest thing to do. IMO finding the correct door lock acuators and connecting them is the only complication.

Proximity remotes have been around since the late-eighties... nothing new.

Yeah, i wasnt planning on taking it from a prius. Any companies you know off the top of your head? cause i was searching all around on google and ebay lastnight to no avail.

I dont care if my car unlocks its self when im around it. I only worry when im not around my car. Also, it seems to me (atleast) thats its a pretty unique feature, and I personaly dont see it on many cars.

Its no different than installing an aftermarket security system with keyless entry.

umm, is that relatively contradictory? no major modification, but yet you would like to make your 20 year old car's door locks, security system and ignition function solely by the operation of a proximity remote?

basically I think the answer you're looking for is no, there's not, it will be a fairly in depth job, cost more than you're probably thinking and eat up more time than a chatty girlfriend.

all I know is f that... I like knowing my car is locked till I don't want it to be... I thought about a keyless entry system for the car... but to tell you the truth, I think the fact that to disarm the alarm I need the key to unlock the door is a good thing.

actually it is pretty easy to disarm the factory alarm system, when unlocking with a Keyless entry or aftermarket alarm system.

Just a wire and a couple of diodes.

dont you wonder when you walk away though...did it actually lock? and then you go back to check and its unlocked cause your close again...hmmmm

Ctrl-Alt-Del fixes the Prius too. It's the damnedest thing, There was a power button on the one I rented a couple years ago.

That would totally be me.. .I would have to leave the key on the ground 50 foot away so I can be like... mmm... just checkin it is still locked.

Then you gotta set your keys on the ground 55 feet away just to see if your doors are locked... When you start walking back to your keys, you'll see some guy pull up, grab them and take off. Go make a phone call to get your spare... come back and your car is gone too!

Proximity door locks ... bad idea.

i work at a bmw dealer so i had the chance to play with the comfort access system on a 750. its a little bit more thought out than the system in the prius as in it'll only unlock the door that you're next to and only if you pull on the handle. to lock it, you push the handle. then again its got 12 antennas inside and outside so it'll pretty much know where the key is and is on a bus system. can't exactly copy it too easily. cool though.

The Prius will relock after a short timeout has passed.

As for building this system, pick up a few electronics magazines and head to the back few pages where all the ads are. You should find several companies that sell the appropriate modules or can point you in the right direction. This is NOT plug and play and DOES require electronics knowledge to get it going.

It occurs to me that someone somewhere must have made this available as an aftermarket kit by now...
