small but anoying electical problems
 

I own a 91 rx7 convertable. The car runs like its supposed to, but it seems to have some small electical problems. Here they are:

1.) High beams on the head lights don't work. The bulbs were changed a month ago with no results. Low beams do work. When i flick the switch to switch to high beams nothing happens, even though my turn signal does work. Any causes and fixes?

2.) Windsheild wipers only work on low. If i switch it to delay or high, the wipers refuse to move. How can that be fixed?

3.) Fog light switch doesn't work. My fog lights won't turn on when i flick the switch. Fog lights replaced with no results. Any ideas?

If there is a way i could fix it myself i would, but trying to get to the solution is the trouble. any help would be great :bigthumb:

For the high beams I'd check out the Dimmer Relay first and if not that then the Dimmer Switch inside the cluster switch.

If it were a series four I'd turn the lights on then slip a grounded wire to the White wire in the Dimmer Relay base and see if the high beams came on. IF they did then I'd strongly suspect the Dimmer Switch in the cluster switch is not putting a ground on that forementioed White wire. You could prove that one way or the other by putting a meter on the White wire and looking for a ground on it when the headlight switch was put to high beams...... I have no series five diagrams...only series four.

Windshield wipers working only on low means one of the relays inside the wiper switch is kaput. It's not plug and play relay. It needs to be soldered in....carefully. That's why the reference to MazdaMark in the above post.

If I had these problems I'd buy a series five wiring diagram from MAZDATRIX for about sixty bucks and figure out the problem.

A repeat: Go to the front of the radiator. See the relays? The most inboard relay is the Dimmer Relay (on a series four). Look at the wires going to it. One wire white, another red/white, another red/green, another red/green again, another, red/black.

IF those are the colors on your relay, then turn the headlights to ON. With the headlights ON get a jumper wire and attach one end to a good ground like the batt negative post, then insert the other end of that wire to the WHITE wire in the Dimmer Relays connector. The headlights should go BRIGHT as long as you hold that white wire to ground. Take the ground away and they should go DIM.

I just did this on my series four outside, so it's safe.

If your car reacted the way described, then suspect your Dimmer Switch is bad. Might be another thing, but not likely. You could disconnect your Dimmer Switches plug and ohm out the wire to the dimmer relay. It would be the RED/YELLOW at the dimmer switch and WHITE at the dimmer relay. There's a connector inbetween that causes the color to change.

Also check the ground wire at the dimmer switch. It should be BLACK.
