shuddering in steering wheel...
 

Whats causing my steering wheel to shudder when i merge to the left and right? it does it at speeds over 30 or 40 MPH, and it does it worse when i merge to the left. i checked the wheel bearings and they're fairly new and work fine (no play or noise). So what should i check next?....

Is this a new problem or did it happen more gradually? If it's the later it might be that your tires are have worn in an uneven way. Having your wheel/tires rebalanced may help. Another thought is your may need to replace a tie rod.

rotate your tires.

you either have a bent wheel or out of round tire.

simple 5 minute fix.


bad tie rod or rack bushings is another possibility but way more unlikely.

I second tires. You'd be surprised what a new set of tires will do for your car.

check the balance AND the PSI.

my car does the same thing, not so bad at times but terrible at others... and ill tell you what my tires are SHIT so i third the tires... mine should go away in feb when i get new tires and the RB suspension package :)

it cant be the tires, its done this since i bought the car a year ago, it wasnt very bad then but its become unbearable, it does when the steering wheel is straight but really jumps around when the wheel is slightly turned to the left or right. what else could it be and how can i check it....

yes get you tires blanced or if you need new one get some ne ones and blance them too

i just said it wasnt the tires, i replaced them whenever i bought the car, and i still had this problem, and i also had new tires balanced and put on the front on the car 3 months ago...

check the balance AGAIN and the psi.

it might not be the balance, but you might have hit a bump or something during those three months. next time you do get them balanced, make sure the tire balance machine at the shop says exactly 0.00 - 0.00. and the guy looks like he knows what he's doing.

and make sure there is not more than one weight on each side of the wheel...... it might not be the balance, but just check it again for the hell of it.

Suspension - my left rear shock is leaking and while my car was parked up for a few months has probably dumped most of its damper oil. as a result i get bad steering stability, especially when cornering. Its not nice to drive.

I also suspected wheel bearings, tie rods, ball joints etc. but it seems the shocks are the culprit in my case. Definitely check the suspension on all 4 corners - I think the multilink rear suspension tends to make problems like this more noticeable than in other cars.

well i have the same problem. EXEPT mine only does it while turning slighly right at speed over 40. So i was dead set on it being a driver side ball joint... or tie rod end. Took it in and everythign checked out and he told me to go get the tires checked and an alignment. Taking it in tommorow (monday) to discount tire. Ill post and let you know if this worked. I also have my tein s-tech springs in my living room and a ful lset of KYB AGX coming in. So if its not the right front tire, ill post if the suspention mods helped.

DONT MEAN TO JACK THIS THREAD but wiht my new suspention setup what will i gain by getting the cusco pillowball mounts?

Check alignment.

im taking it in tomorrow and see what he thinks. im kinda leaning towards front end alignment but who knows, i will post after that...

you obviously didn't read what i posted, a bent wheel cannot be balanced out and will cause your steering wheel to vibrate/shudder. it isn't hard to lose control of an FC and tap a curb and ding a wheel, i'm sure 75% of FCs on the road have some slight scrapes on one wheel or more..

rotate your front tires to the rear, i bet your problem goes away. if not then you have a worn out suspension component, alignment alone will not cause a shudder in the steering wheel but worn out parts combined with an out of spec alignment will.

also, if you are using cheap tires even brand new ones can cause steering vibrations because cheap tires usually are not perfectly round. they can however be trued by raising your RPMs to 6k, dropping the clutch while aimed up a hill for about a minute, rotate and repeat... ;)

It sounds like a weight came off your wheel and its unbalanced. Any tire shop can balance a wheel in no time for not much.

Well i replaced my driver side tire. Got them balenced. Still shudders. installing new suspention and getting an alignment as soon as my agx's get here :/
