Should I rebuild my Tranny or buy a new one?
 

Just wondering what you guys think.

I have a 1990 Turbo II and 2nd and 3 gear are both grinding (2nd is really bad). It has been determined that the Synchro's are going bad.

I will be getting about $1500 real soon....but I would love to use some of that money for Fuel Upgrades and a boost controller.

So what would you guys do? I have already tried putting in better gear oil and it did help a little...but its still a problem. The tranny is my top priority right now.

What is a cheaper way to go? New or rebuild. Hell if I can find a used tranny that is good I will go that route also. So can some people in here give me a general idea of what the costs will be?

Rebuild it. If you buy an used one, even if guaranteed, it could start acting up 3-4 months down the line. Rebuild, 2nd and 3rd syncros about $70. Take the trans out and have someone do it @ $300/400. While inside they can check bearings also. This way you know what you have and it should last another 75/80,000 miles. Use Redline fluid.

Way better to rebuild. Only replace if you have major damage..

I rather not go with a used tranny just for the fact that it could crap out on me over time.

I have got a few quotes here and there and the best quote I got was $700 for a rebuild. This seems a little high to me.

Find out what parts they include at that price. If it includes all bearings. syncros, & seals - that's not bad. If your bearings are nice and quiet, you can skip them and save ~$250. Also, you may want to look at the clutch & flywheel.
