Shorting out problem

My 89 RX7 GXL is loosing all power to the car and the motor shuts off. It only happens when my steering column is moved up and down and sometimes it'll just happen out of the blue when I'm driving. Then two seconds later the power will come back if I lift the steering column up. I know that it is wires shorting out, but which wire in the steering column is causing this?

sounds like it's around the ignition key ..don't quote me on this one...IMO..it sounds like the wires are shorting to the off position..pop the cover off the column and take a peak..disconnect battery first 'cause if you don't and it shorts out ..it could cause damage .Take a visual of it ..nothin?..maybe the switch itself...little springs it there floppin around ..surely you can find another..everyone here seems like they have another car in their back pocket!!!try another switch...but as always get a second opinion..feels right do it....best of luck to ya!......second suggestion..all that fartin around..I wouldn't bother you'd see a complete used column in there.I've done it before saves all the time of searchin for gremlins!!!

just me again!!!

also check connections to the column itself you never know could just be a loose wire..again good luck and post if you find the cure ..gives others a solution if they encounter the same thing
