I got BNR stage 1 turbo, installed it and cranked car up today.
Car was sitting outside at -20 degree C few days, but coolant was not frozen.

Before finally starting, i had to disconnect MSD 6A box (died ?), car was flooded but once leadings were working, it started up all right.

But its smoking.....lot of smoke....after 2 minutes still lot of smoke from exhaust and some from engine bay (seems to be engine oil leak on exhaust manifold, but does not seems to come from oil in or oil out fittings......

Exhaust is FULL of oil even in exhaust tip. Its engine oil (i run premix and i could say that this oil in exhaust is from engine oil system, not from premix)

I am worried about some kind of bearing inside turbo got broken and pressurized oil is leaking into exhaust part of turbocharger.
What could have happen? I haven`t run car with this turbo yet, its fresh BNR rebuild and i just cranked it up and had it up to 2000 rpm with no gear in max......

Any ideas ? I have old stock turbo here so i could swap it and check what will happen, but idea my $600 hybrid just blew up in my driveway just does not sound right ;(

 

Sounds like a bearing/seal let loose....Send it back, but call/e-mail them first and explain the situation. I'm sure they'll work with you and fix it.... New turbo's will smoke real bad for a few minutes when first fired up....But the oil in the pipe, thats unacceptable!!!

Just curious if you primed it before firing it up? I wouldn't think it would cause that drastic a failure, but I'm certainly no expert. The return line is clear? Maybe they goofed up a seal during the build/rebuild? It seems like a lot of people here use BNR so they really sound reputable. I would give them a jingle and see what they have to say.

Gosh, what a pisser, with a new turbo. Hoping for ya that it's something simple.

 

Problem is i am in Czech Republic and there is no way to send turbo back to BNR......if turbo is bad, i will have to take it to some turbo repair shop here in cz..... ;(((

 

well how did it get there in the first place?

EDIT: the turbo not the oil... how did the turbo get to you that you cant send it back?

 

i got it with 250lbs of other parts shipped like cargo...if i will have to ship turbo now alone it will cost more than new turbo itself....

 

Have you tried contacting Bryan on this?? From what I read on the forum he has excellent customer service and I am sure he will work with you on this.

Id call him and explain its going to cost that much to ship back and forth. See if they would be willing to reimburse you for turbo repairs at a local shop or something. Seems reasonable..

If an oil seal on the turbo goes.... won't you find oil in the IC piping as well?
This is just from what I've heard from people with leaking turbos, that it will smoke, and you will find oil on the IC piping a good chunk of the time. It doesn't always happen with everybody though.

Something you may want to try is putting the oil pan under vacuum.
It worked like a charm for me, I was smoking like CRAZY, it was almost funny.
I simply teed off into a big vaccuum line right off the intake manifold, installed a cheap check valve (IMPORTANT so that boost doesn't go into the oil pan, otherwise it will smoke even more whenever you are under boost), and put it on the nipple on the oil filler neck. (I just popped off the line from the 3-way check valve that is stock, and left it open)
Now, this is on a turboed N/A, not sure if TII's have a nipple there, or how it would react to strong oil pan vaccum.
It stopped all smoke completely, and immediatly.
Even if the seal is bad, it should still reduce the smoke.

 

No play compressor to exhaust direction, little bit of play up and down (when mounted). It does not spin perfectly, but no worse than my old turbo which does not leak any oil. I still does not removed turbo from engine but it looks like there is some external oil leak too (i checked all connections and they looks fine......looks like oil is leaking where compressor is bolted to exhaust part of turbo.
