shimming the tie rods *please help*
 

hey i have new tierod ends....i wanted to shim them like RETed said a whiles back to get some more angle......but i was uncertain how many or how far off i should shim them? thanx

also i installed a new clutch line and it doesnt feel stiffer i bled it but nothing....i was wondering if maybe the fluid isnt good enough? its some coastal manual transmission fluid stuff it isnt brake fluid though...so maybe thats my problem? please help

You put transmission fluid in your clutch resovoir??

Yeah, thats your freakin problem, its DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid ONLY... It even says that on the damn cap!!

Drain ALL of the fluid out (that means ALL of it,, work all the parts so it ALL comes out)... and I mean ALL OF IT..... then flush it out with DOT 3 or DOT4 BRAKE FLUID. Then fill it up and bleed it.

Don't expect too much of a difference in the clutch feel with a stainless line when you get the system fully drained then re-filled and bleed with the propper fluid.

As far as shimming your tie rods. why?? More steering angle? Becarefull you do not induce bump steer angle to your suspension by messing with the tie rod angles. And get the car aligned after you install the rod ends.

Hydraulic fluid is hydraulic fluid.
What do you think ATF is? I'll give you a hint: hydraulic fluid.
ATF works fine in the clutch system. Trust me. Been there, done that.

Works fine in the transmission, too. Manual says, GEAR OIL ONLY. Yet, running atf in the tranny results in results nearly identical to that of changing to synthetic gear oil. I've taken apart N/A trannies that were running ATF; there was no extra measurable wear over a gear-oiled tranny. In fact, on my 88 N/A, which had ATF in it when I purchased it, switching to redline gear oil brought back a 2-3 gear shift grind that didn't exist when ATF was in the tranny.

Shimming the tie rod ends downwards does result in bumpsteer.
Shimming the steering rack results in the same thing (smaller turning radius) without any induced bumpsteer.

As of shimming at steering rack, we are using 6mm spacers (between tie rod and rack) to get more steering angle.

ok so i go purchase some washers...and where do i place them?(the fluid i used was for the clutch originally but i just re-bled it and added DOT 4.....its feeling really good now as its broken in i guess and very stiff...i love it noww....BUT im still having the confusion on the shimming (im drift/autox and i wanted the sterring angle i thought u shimmed the tierod ends....???) im supre confused please steer me ont he right track?!
