shifter problem-not bushing related

i replaced the bushings so I know they are good
It's just hard to get into gears. Especially first and fifth. And downshifting is a bitch too because it's not smooth. My friend's rsx-s shifter is soo smooth. I wish mine could be like that. I think I may need a new transmission. It is almost 20 yrs old. Where can I find one. I don't think I'll look in the junk yard...

is it the oem shifter, or a short shifter? your tranny could be the problem, synchros tend to wear out, and that would definatly make it harder to get into gear. you might want to try changing the gear oil first, maybe its old and dirty, you might get lucky

If the tranny has any life left, synthetic gear oil can be close to a magic fix.

neo synthetics :bigthumb:

HITMANEM2 08-19-05 11:48 AM

how does that stuff compare to redlines mt-90?

SureShot 08-19-05 11:53 AM

Today's synthetics are all good.

A few years back there were some whose sulfur anti-shock additives were hard on synchros.

Read the labels.

use redline MT-90 in the transmission, it does magic...

but to make it clear, what are u talking about? GEARS not going in smoothly? or the SHIFTER? if it is the shifter, check the shifter case gear oil level... and it might be that some old bushings got stuck under the selector end....

when i took out my transmission, there were more than 1 (the one that i dropped) broken bushings directly under the shifter selector end

redline is great as well-i just happen to be more familiar with neo(and i LOOOOOVE their all purpose grease omg that stuff is SO FUN to play with!! like finger paint!!) :bigthumb: :bigthumb:

but i digress...

Mine did that so i loosened the three bolts just a tad to let it loose alittle bit.

Ok, so let me go into a little more detail on my problem. My spring on the left side has been broke so it doesn't spring back to neutral when i push the shifter to the left. But the one on the right side was fine until tomorrow. I pushed it to the right and it didn't spring back. The weird thing is sometimes it does only when I don't push it far enough.
Now ever since that happened, the shifting grooves seemed to have moved a little to the right. Shifting from 1st to 2nd is not smooth at all and i'm hoping maybe new oil can fix this.
The car is drivable but just a pain in the ass. I still haven't fixed the gas smell problem which i think is a blown lower intake gasket.
