Shift Knob
The leather cloth covering my shifter tore and there is heat coming up on my hand when i go to shift. Where can I get a new one?

To deal with the heat, you need new rubber insulators, aka inner boots. Considering your location, go to Mazdatrix in Signal Hill. Or, off one of the 2nd Gens pointed out to be at the Wilmington Ecology. But a crap shoot that they're in good condition given the heat and oil deterioration they’re subject too.

Many older cars used rubber shift boots, if you could find one and cut.it.to fit it may be cheaper. I use one of a fox body mustang

That sounds like my price range so I will check out autozone. I ordered the inner boot yesterday from amazon so it should be here by next week. I don't think it should be too difficult to figure out how to install it. I hope...

My LTGFWBFF made a new boot for my vert using the ratted-out original as a pattern. It was a Christmas gift 4-5 years ago. She bought the vinyl at a fabric store. It looks absolutely beautiful. She had practiced this art by making boots for my oldest son's Honda/Acura hobby.
Someday I am going to have her make a new one with red stitching.:nod: I also found the inner rubber boots were torn and deteriorated. I made a thick pad of multiple layerer of jute carpet padding to basically fill and seal the area under the boot. The temperature stays cool, the fumes stay out and it quiets the noise from the undercar area. It has never gotten wet or given me any trouble. |
Very creative Jackhild59. I just ordered the rubber boot from amazon but I wish i waited and read your post. Why couldn't you post this a couple of days ago hahaha. As far as the red stitching on the leather boot, I just pick one up from Autozone (as suggested by Rx-7fetish) for 10 bucks, but I am sure the one that you get made will be way better than the one autozone sells (an more valuable to you).

Making a boot isn't that hard. Just look at how well my first e-brake boot turned out.

I made the shifter. I make pretty much everything for my car. I first started by melting/digging all the rubber out from between the upper and lower shifter (yes, the shift lever is 2 piece). Then I welded a 10x1.5 stud to the top of that. I bought a 2" steel ball, drilled a hole in it, tapped 10x1.5 threads in it, and powder coated it gloss white. The ball is really heavy, which makes shifting a smooth and easy glide into each gear.

I'm not to handy with a sharp needle so I bought the shift boot and ebarke boot from redline. What do you guys do for the stock shift knob when the leather starts to peel off? Is there any way to re-do it? Or do you pretty much just have to buy a new knob? I like the stock one a lot. |
Of course there's a way to re-do it. You cut the threads holding the 2 leather pieces together, lay them down on new leather, trace, cut, soak in hot water, stitch the pieces together, finagle the new cover over the knob. Once it dries out, it'll shrink down and give you the tight leather-wrapped look you want.
Or buy another knob :) |
I just installed the new leather boot and I used a CV boot as the rubber boot underneath the leather boot. For the leather boot I used the universal boot from autozone. It actually looks pretty good.
