Shift Buzzer

Hello,

How can I adjust my shift buzzer? As far as I can tell, it goes off exactly at 8,000 RPMs. I would like it to go off a little bit lower.. maybe 7,800 or 7,850.

On the back of the tach there is a small circuit board (you will need to remove the tach from the gauge cluster to get to it).

On that circuit board there are two small pots, one metal one and one plastic one. On the metal one, turn the pot towards the back of the tachometer approx 1/4 turn.

DO NOT ADJUST THE PLASTIC ONE.

Then I would assume the Pot adjustment can also be done on an S4?(86-88?)..Sorry to have to Ask...Just that the Thread starter was askin about His 1990...Thanks,Icemark,(in advance) If you can Ellaborate.I am Curious as to "how much" the Pot can be adjusted. Can you Set it to Be any lower?

I have set it as far as 1000 RPM lower, and yes the S4 use the same thing

I think I will try to make it go off at 7000, seeing that IS where the redline is. I have cought myself around 7800 rpm allready and it still didnt go off. (unless the S4 IS set for 7K allready and mine just doesnt work? lol)

GodSquadMandrake 10-26-06 11:15 AM

Whoa... I didn't know you could adjust it.

ScottyBaby 10-26-06 01:25 PM

Thank you!

My S4 goes off just a tick below redline. Like 6900.

mine goes off close to 7k...my buddy's 86 n/a buzzer doesnt work or doesnt have it...i bet ur hitting rev. limiter good luck tho.

i really dont think mine works cause i have gone all the way to 8600 without even a fuel cutoff, i need to rip apart my dash and take a look

arghx 07-30-07 01:31 PM

something must be weird with your buzzer, because mine goes off at like 6800

cozmosland 07-31-07 02:53 AM

ya, i think it's disconnected or just not working.
i have a 1990 gxl

CarzArKoo1 07-31-07 03:03 AM

lol, dont' kill your engine like that guys, keep it low.

cozmosland 07-31-07 03:46 AM

i know, i was just trying to find if it was set really high, cause i'm worried that it is broken cause that would mean the oil or coolant buzzer wont work

siguy2k 07-31-07 12:52 PM

Reving a properly tuned rotary is not going to hurt anything at all. I mean look inside them nothing to break with a proper tune.

cozmosland 07-31-07 02:08 PM

ya i know, but the point is, it's kinda a safety thing that that buzzer does work, and mine forsure isnt working!

TweakGames 07-31-07 04:08 PM

I am going to be reattaching my buzzer again, but this time I want to have the buzzer outside the gauges so that it is louder, AND I want to have a shift light turn on when the buzzer goes off. I am thinking that I will need a relay that would go in place of the stock shifter, and have that relay turn on the pizzo buzzer and a colored LED.

How would you finish this? Would the light and the buzzer then go to a ground?

I dont think it needs to be that difficult. Do you think I could just run the LED and the buzzer in parallel on this design?

Let me know if you think it will work.

Thanks

ok :D I finished my shift buzzer replacement project.

I got everything at radioshack, if anybody wants the item numbers of the stuff I used just let me know.

I used a generic 30 amp "auto relay", 2 ultrabright 10 mm red LEDs, 1 5mm blue LED, and 1 6v pizzo buzzer. I was just going to go with 1 to act like a shift light but I didnt have the knowledge or the tools to figure out what resistors I would need. So I just kepts adding things till I got to around 12 volts normal V rating.

I hooked up the relay, (very easy to use once you figure it out haha) and tested to make sure it worked with a 9v battery. I attached the 85 and 86 terminals to the stock buzzers + and - holes. Then i ran all the LEDs in series and connected the ends to ignition (I connected mine to my decks positive and negative) and then just imagined that the last 2 terminals on the relay was another LED. I think the ports were 30 and .... 87, connected those, popped the hood and disconnected my water sensor and I heard the buzzer buzzing. Went into the car to find 2 VERY bright red LEDS pointing towards each other from the sides of the gauge cluster, the blue LED pointing up from the end of the cigarettes ash tray. Leaves a nice bright blue circle on the ceiling of the car.

I took it for a drive and was very interesting. I went from a broken buzzer to a buzzer and 3 leds haha. I was able to drive it right up to redline instead of guessing or looking at the tach.

Recommended mod for anyone that is REALLY bored, and has a broken redline buzzer. Also I recommend fixing your buzzer if it is broken cause it warns you of other things other than just redline. (like low coolant and such)

I will have pictures/movie of it in a couple days when I get home.

as promised, here are a few pictures (wow big :D ) of the lights. I am still trying to find the best place for them, so they are completely movable. Right now I have them on the sides pointing at each other. I haven't tried pointing them towards the driver yet (I Think they are bright enough so far) These pictures are in the daytime light.

I will post some night pictures and maybe a video later tonight.
