Series 5 engine into Series 4 (Turbo)

I feel like a idiot for asking this, but I've searched and haven't come up with a *real* answer :(

The facts:

- 88 AE with blown engine
- Order a 88 Jspec engine and receive a 89-91

So far, I know:

- Replace front cover\OMP\TB
- Replace injectors (or use resistors in the harness)

What I don't know:

- Do I need to change sensors? (like the BAC, etc)
- Anything else that I don't mention here

TIA

Elio

your on the right track. i have an s5 bare block in my 87TII

if you want to use mech. OMP, you need to swap front cover and I'd use the s4 waterpump too.

you can use the 88 intake manifolds w/ 88 sensors/injectors/TB. or you can use the 89 manifolds w/ the 88TB and 88 injectors

you can use the 89 high impedence injectors if you bypass the solenoid resistor. thats the little silver box w/ 5 wires coming out of it below the boost sensor. basically you just have to splice all 5 wires together (look at schematic and you will understand). the idea is that the solenoid resistor is used with the low impedence injectors, its like having resistors wired in. if you use the 89 injectors, you dont need the resistors, so you bypass it.

I believe that the BAC is the same, but not positive. same for the coolant temp/air temp/CAS. most important is that you have the 88 tps

I got a s5 jspec to put in my 87. my setup will have the 89 "short block" only. with the 87 front cover/waterpump/intake manifolds/TB. I have made extensive changes to the 87 wiring harness (including bypass solenoid resistor to use 89 injectors)

hope this helps. any more questions?

88s don't have that resistor box, I belive all car after 87.5 came with high imp injectors...

this will happen if you do that.

if you're using the S4 ecu, use all the S4 sensors.

Thanks for the info guys!!

I'll update later nexr week :)

Would a series 5 water pump work on on series 4 motor?

jacobcartmill 07-07-03 02:26 AM

yes i believe all the 13b waterpumps are interchangable except for the FD 13b-rew waterpump because it spins the wrong way.

If you change the front cover, you have to change the turbo oil line, as it won't fit properly (from the s5 tII to s4 front cover) just take it off your dead engine. Might as well as get rid of all the vac rack/emissions crap and you'll save a boatload of time, and you're going to have to rig up the wastegate as it's ellectronically controlled on a s5. Oh, there's probably a ton more I'm forgetting, but *shrug* You get the idea ;)

ok..

I've done this swap.

All that needs to be changed are the following: (provided that you're still using your s4 ECU.

Use ALL the parts off of your old longblock.

Swap onto the new shortblock:
Front Cover (You'll need a gasket for this)
ummm... that's it?

I don't recall doing anything else..

Talk about OLD-DEAD thread!!

I am selling the project car, since the Jspec engine was junk POS, and teh sencond one I got from those bastard was even in worst conditions!!

And to top everything off, my daily driven FC died  :(
