Ser. IV T2 sputters at steady speeds...

my friend has a Series 4 T2, 5speed. and just had the engine rebuilt.

it drives nicely, Very nicely from what i hear.

but, at cruising speeds, itll have an occasional miss. and the longer you drive, the More misses/sputters, and the more violent they become. pretty soon, it begins bucking pretty roughly, and he has to stop on the side of the road. after waiting no more than a minute, he can drive another 10 miles or so down the freeway before it begins the cycle.

i say its an OMP. but, its a fresh rebuild, not to mention, a mechanical OMP...youd think it would be pretty reliable (compared to the 89-92)

what would the problem be on this thing?

the SAME thing happened to my T2 right after i bought it...i was cruising for like 2 hours...it was fine...then all of a sudden it would sputter...then the next hour it was worse...then finally it wouldn't get over 3K at all! but even if i stopped for an hour. it would still buck VIOLENTLY. i finalyl made it home...13 hours of this shit! and just parked it. i just put in a 91 spec TPS, since when i checked the codes it gave me errors for the TPS. and now its fine again.....buuuut, i've only taken it downt the road 5 miles and back...not out on the highway yet...i'm scared to. :) but yeah, can you check the codes on the 86-88's? that might tell you whats wrong. my thought was maybe my OMP was bad too, but it dind't give me a code for it...oh well, good luck man

i think you know my buddy, he told me that you had the same problem w/ your car. his names Jay.

he said hes gott a new BAC but im not sure about the TPS. IIRC, we cant run codes on the 86-88s. they dont have the right computer, they dont log the error codes. so if anything, you have to catch them red handed. you actually have to monitor the computer WHILE the problems occur. however, the 89-91s do have the error logging feature, so i think you can go in and find out what problems have occured. oh well, i guess we will have to see what happens.

i spose ill tell him to check the TPS, if thats ok, then, maybe check out the OMP.

thanks

Excuse my ignorance, but what is OMP? My TII does that every now and then but it will go away. When it stutters, it STUTTERS very bad like it's not igniting or somn. Any clues?

You might follow BigWoodie's post on this site. Sounds like the same problem. You've probably been doing that, but just in case.

OMP= Oil Metering Pump

86-88= mechanical OMP, more reliable, more safe. wont fail abruptly, allowing you to smoke your apex/side seals

89-91= electric OMP, better operation, less safe, cuz it will fail suddenly, instead of gradually. and you will smoke your seals quickly.

does BigWoogie have a linke or what?

do you have the pill in the vaccum line to the boost sensor? the absence of that pill caused hesitation on my 88 TII. I think it's worth checking and it only costs about three bucks from mazda if you need it.

i dont think he has a hesitation problem, except for the 3800 rpm problem. hes gonna put a big fat ground cable from the battery to the engine, i think thats the only ground he has left to make. its just the sputter problem. and the sputs, or pops get more and more frequent and violent the longer he drives... im not sure whats up w/ it yet.
