Sensor that does not swap by oil filter
I got a N/A s4 motor to swap out with my blown one which was sold to me as a "drop in long block." So far I have had to cannibalize all sorts of missing hardware. I am not really sure what this sensor is but it is one wire, screws into the block by the oil filter and the heater hose. Regardless I tried to take it out of my blown motor and put it in the replacement and the thread size is different. Can someone tell me what sensor it is?

Okay so I guess I was pulling off the "old style?" and I need the new one? Old one is way to small to fit into the threads of the new motor

Whats wrong with the one that came in it? If nothing... just leave it.

Nothing came in it... I just happened to notice something went there and tried pulling it off the blown motor, but its too small to thread into it.

it's the coolant temp sensor for the water temp gauge on the dash.
it being a larger port means either the rear iron is from an S5 or the whole engine is from an S5, check the oil metering pump mount because you may be in for some trouble. |
Rotary Evolution: can you elaborate on the thread pitch for these 2 sensors?
I know you can make a "regular aftermarket one" fit..(putting a 1/8th into the 27 Bpt hole).just wonder which engine has that size hole..S4? Thanks Big Guy. |
i don't have a tap that works for the BPT on these engines nor have i needed one so i can't give specifics on it's size and pitch.
the series 5 will take a 1/8" NPT but it will eventually begin to mangle the threads on the sensor because the pitch isn't exactly the same, but "good enuf" if you just cinch it down. on the series 4 you could of course drill and tap it to 1/8" NPT since there is plenty of meat there, if you tap the S5 you will begin to damage the threads and just make matters worse. |
This could be bad, I just tried to put my N/A S4 Fan on the water pump and it does not fit, the water pump male end is much bigger then the fans female end for the small metal shaft. :( This was sold to me as a N/A S4 from that rotary workz place that is no longer doing business.

sounds to be an S5 engine, does the S4 oil metering pump fit the front cover? if so then all you need is the S5 thermofan and the sensor you ordered.
could be a bunch of tossed together parts from random series engines though, in which case i suppose the saying "you get what you pay for" applies. |
The omp was blocked off, will ecu work? Is water temperature sensor and fan that works all I need to worry about acquiring?

the ECU will be fine if it has S4 electronics, you will of course need to premix the fuel.
the water pump and water sensor are the only 2 other major differences between the engine so the S5 sensor will work with a new female spade connector. the water pump will work with the S5 thermofan. if it is truly an all S5 engine and you paid for an S4 and had plans to premix anyways then you got a free upgrade(at the cost of changing parts to make it work). |

the tapered larger port size one might be on the very late series 4 but it is VERY uncommon, perhaps right before the switch to S5 since there is no switch in part numbers that i have ever found for those odd bullet sensors that fit the large port.
i think i've seen it maybe once or twice in several hundred engines. but if the water pump is S5, the block off has 3 holes and the rear coolant temp sensor port is the large one and the housings have a boss located above the trailing spark plugs i would have to say it's a series 5. if only one or 2 of the above is true it might just be an odd combo. |
I know I am being needy at this point, but can someone send a pic of the clip that goes from eng harness to that little black relay thing next to the passenger strut tower? It got damaged and cracked open, two wires fell out and I got a replacement clip, but not sure which go where.

Are you using your S4 injectors? Does the higher comp. of the S5 make a diff to the ECU

Pressure sensor, 4 wires brown/red - brown/white - black/white - black/red dot

If you have a plug w/two wires left in the plug then you could use the wiring diagram in the FSM to tell you which specific position the other two wires go to.
The B/W and Black wire are at the top of the plug (side w/the nub on it). Br/R goes below the B/W wire. And dots are not used to identify these wires as either they are solid color or a solid color w/a stripe on it. |

Ok so just tried to turn it over for a sec and the starter really sounded to struggle... took spark plugs out and tried turning it by hand and it seemd hard and no air blows out of sparkplug holes

i guess we know why he isn't in business anymore.
but you may want to specify which shop this was, since there's 3 that i know of that all sound the same with slightly different spelling. only rotary workz i know of is the shop in oregon that barfed up a bunch of drama on the other forum recently. |
