Seals around the windshield

Are the seals around the windsheild mazda specific? I'm talking about the external strip that runs along the windsheild and the roof and a pillar of the car.

I have a small rust spot along the edge of the roof and i need to pull the seals off and do some work.

I heard from somewhere I can use generic one from any autoglass store. Can someone confirm this?

The generic one requires trimmimg of the ends to fit in the corner clips. The texture/finish appearance is different from stock also.

I dont know about the windshield, but the back glass seal (the guy at the autoglass place called it the molding) I replaced with a generic one.

I had lots of rust bubbles coming up around the glass from where the car sat at the beach for 5 years. So we (me and my Dad) pulled out the glass, grinded out the rust, sprayed some rust fix in it (it turned the rust to black primer, its pretty cool stuff) then used body filler to fill the holes, sanded em down, etc. Used high gloss black spray paint to paint it, layed down some glue (also bought from the autoglass store) and pressed the back-hatch + new molding back in and let dry.

You'd never know it was ever rusted as bad as it was...and it should be a pretty permanent fix. :bigthumb:

Too bad I dont have any before and after pics

Good luck with the windshield - Chris

yeah but you need to have the tools to do it.

Well you need something to cut the rubber. The thing looks like an "L" so that you can put it behind the windshield and cut it.
You also need the thingy to stick the windshield back on. It's called urethane or something. You should prime the glass before too so that it sticks to the urethane.
You'll also need a new molding on the top.

Here are the steps:
1) Unscrew the molding on the side and take them out.
Take off the windshield wipers and the plastic too.
2) Take off the top molding.
3) Cut the rubber behind the windshield.
4) Take off windshield.
5) Cut the remaining rubber so that it's flat.
6) Prime the glass where the glue's gonna be so that it sticks. Put the top molding in place too.
7) Put the urethane on the car. Begin on the top and bottom and then on the sides.
8) Put windshield on.
9) Put molding back on.
10) Tape molding with special tape so that it stays on

Also don't wash the car or drive it too much for 24 hours. And take off the tape after a day.
I think that's all. :)
