Salvage yard trivia

Okay, so I was at the yard tooday, looking for some parts for my ladys s-10 pick-up, and I ran across a S4 RX-7 that said SE on the side and had OEM graphics on the rocker in between the wheels. I want to know if the rear end is a vLSD unit or no? And correct me if I am wrong, but since this is a S4 coupe rear, it will bolt into my vert s4. Also, about how far do you think my speedo will be off? vert = 3.80 final drive and the coupe = 4.10 final drive.

If it's an SE, it should be 4-lug and therefore not a LSD. IIRC, only the TII , GXL and GTU had LSD. Also, I'm pretty sure the S4 used the clutchpack type LSD and the S5 had the viscous type diff.
Do you have an automatic in your vert? I think that's the only way you get a 3.9:1...

88 was the only s4 vert, and all s4 verts are 5spd. The vert was a "cruiser" and mazda put the "cruising rear end in the car. So it's an open diff? The guy said he wanted $200, so I'll just wait till I find a S5 GTUs.

good luck finding a s5 gtus, best way to check would be to simply put the car in nutural, take off the e-brake. Spin one wheel.. if the other wheel spins the same direction, BINGO LSD! If it spins the opsite direction.. its an open diff.

Hope that helps.

Or you can buy my 88 GTU shell for like 800. I know it has LSD. 88 GTU is the best year period. the s5 models are basically the base models.

Okay, thanks you guys, now that I am straight on that. THE HUNT CONTINUES!

Yea, man, you should have come to the meet not to long ago.

I would have if i would have known. I guess I should check the regional threads from time to time.

dudes, all you have to do is spin one wheel while the car is off the ground. If both wheels spin in the same direction, the you have lsd. If they spin oppizite, you got an open diff. a one tire fire

You can also check for a LSD by getting under the car and looking at the diff filler plug. LSD's usually have warning tags on their fillers regarding use of a proper oil.

What if the car in the salvage yard had their diff swapped? I changed my GXL's pumpkin gears with clutch type LSD. You may know which cars came stock with LSD's but you have to check to see if someone swapped one in. You gotta look hard for that Diamond in the rough...
